Chapter 22 - WHAT VICTOR FINALLY UNDERSTOOD

I didn’t speak for several minutes.
Victor stayed beside me.
Not touching.
Not fixing.
Waiting.
Finally I said:
“My parents never told me.”
Anthony’s voice came through the phone.
“Maybe they thought the story belonged to the past.”
“Or they were ashamed.”
Rachel said gently:
“Marjorie’s notes don’t sound ashamed.”
“What do they say?”
Paper moved.
Then Rachel read:
Harper will grow up knowing she was wanted. She does not need to grow up thinking she was almost taken.
My eyes filled.
Of course.
Mom had not hidden the truth because she was ashamed of me.
She wanted my first understanding of family to be security.
Not fear.
Anthony whispered:
“That sounds like her.”
“Yes.”
Victor finally spoke.
“Your mother spent her life creating the thing she once needed.”
I looked at him.
“So did yours.”
He frowned.
“Elena.”
My chest softened.
“She wanted Finn to feel safe without needing gates.”
Victor looked toward the playground.
Finn was arguing with another child about whose turn it was on the slide.
Normal.
Loud.
Alive.
“My father taught me protection meant control,” Victor said.
“My grandfather apparently knew better.”
Anthony answered:
“Maybe people forget good lessons when power makes forgetting convenient.”
Victor almost smiled.
“Possibly.”
I looked at him.
“You told me I was nothing but hired help.”
His expression fell.
“I know.”
“You thought family was something you had the authority to define.”
“Yes.”
“And now?”
Victor looked toward Finn.
Then Anthony.
Then me.
“Now I think family is whoever keeps choosing the work.”
That answer sat quietly between us.
Not blood.
Not contracts.
Not ownership.
Work.
Showing up.
Repair.
Truth.
Then Finn came running toward us.
“Harper!”
I wiped my eyes quickly.
“What?”
“Dad said Uncle Anthony can come to dinner.”
Victor looked mildly offended.
“I said we could ask him.”
Finn ignored him.
“Are you coming?”
Anthony smiled.
“If you want me there.”
Finn rolled his eyes.
“Obviously.”
Then he looked at me.
“You too.”
“I usually am.”
“No.”
His expression became serious.
“Not because you work.”
My throat tightened.
“Because you’re family.”
Victor lowered his eyes.
Not from shame this time.
Something more complicated.
Finn took my hand.
Then Victor’s.
May you like
And dragged both of us toward the playground.
None of us corrected him.
