Chapter 17 - ELENA WANTED TO LEAVE THE ESTATE

“Elena kept a second notebook,” Anthony said.

Victor stared.

“No.”

“She showed it to me once.”

“Where is it?”

“I don’t know.”

“What was inside?”

“Plans.”

Victor’s expression changed.

“What kind?”

“To leave the Rossi estate.”

“Leave me?”

“No.”

Anthony shook his head.

“She was not planning to end the marriage.”

“Then what?”

“She wanted the three of you to move somewhere smaller.”

Away from the gates.

Away from guards around every door.

She feared Finn would grow up believing the world outside the estate was dangerous.

Victor looked down.

“She told me that.”

“Did you listen?”

“No.”

At least he didn’t lie.

Anthony continued.

“She was also documenting financial control.”

“What control?”

“Your father.”

Carlo Rossi.

Dead for years.

“What was he doing?”

“Using Elena’s family trust to pay certain private-security expenses.”

Victor frowned.

“Elena had no family trust.”

“Yes, she did.”

The Reed Family Support Trust.

Property.

Education funds.

Old family assets.

“Why would my father have access?”

“Through estate-management structures connected to your marriage.”

“Did Elena authorize it?”

“Some early transfers.”

“And later?”

“She suspected some were made without informed consent.”

Again.

Control wearing the costume of protection.

“What was the second notebook supposed to prove?”

“That Elena had independent resources.”

“Enough to move.”

“Yes.”

Victor closed his eyes.

She had needed proof she could choose where her family lived.

Then Anthony showed us a photograph.

Elena.

My mother.

A third woman.

“Rachel Reed.”

The mother of Noah Reed—the infant transferred with Finn.

“Why were they together?”

“Rachel was our cousin.”

That explained the hospital overlap.

Family.

Not an infant-switch mystery.

Not some secret parentage twist.

Rachel had been in a custody dispute.

Elena wanted Rossi lawyers nowhere near it.

Then Anthony turned the photograph over.

My mother had written:

RACHEL, ELENA, ME — LAST MEETING BEFORE RACHEL LEFT.

“Where did she go?”

“Wisconsin.”

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

“Does she know about Finn?”

“Yes.”

Victor stiffened.

Anthony raised one hand.

“She never contacted him.”

“Why?”

“Elena asked her not to unless the second notebook surfaced.”

My pulse changed.

“Why?”

Anthony looked at Victor.

“Because Elena thought it contained something that would change how Victor saw his own family.”

Then he pulled out an old financial document.

And on the bottom—

was my mother’s signature.
