Chapter 1 - The Evidence

The responder didn't say a word.

He just stared at the glowing screen of my father's phone.

His thumb hovered over the display.

The silence in the dining room grew so thick you could choke on it.

Grandma held my newborn brother tighter against her chest.

I stepped closer.

I watched the color completely drain from my father’s face.

He lunged forward.

“Give that back!"

"You don’t have a warrant!”

The responder stepped out of reach.

His hand rested instinctively on his utility belt.

He turned the screen toward his partner.

I caught a glimpse of it.

It wasn't just a text message.

It was a video file.

It was paused on a thumbnail of the wide glass jar.

And beneath it, an open browser tab for a life insurance portal.

The policy had been approved three days ago.

My stomach violently turned.

The responder looked at my father with absolute disgust.

"You weren't outside guessing," the responder said.

His voice dropped to a low, dangerous octave.

"You were standing in the hallway recording it."

My father backed away.

His hands raised in a desperate panic.

But the front door was already blocked.

Two police officers had just walked onto the porch.
