Chapter 7 - The Trial

Six months later, my father’s criminal trial began.
The media caught wind of the "Glass Jar Plot."
News vans swarmed the courthouse daily.
I sat in the front row, holding Grandma’s hand.
I completely ignored the cameras.
My father looked pathetic in his orange jumpsuit.
He had lost weight.
His arrogant posture had completely vanished.
His defense attorney tried to paint him as a victim of a manipulative girlfriend.
But the prosecution played the video from his own phone.
The courtroom watched in horrified silence.
My father’s voice whispered on the recording.
"Hurry up, stuff him in, the old lady is moving upstairs."
The jury visibly recoiled.
His girlfriend took the stand in her own prison uniform.
She detailed exactly how they planned to split the insurance money.
My father refused to look at me.
The jury deliberated for less than two hours.
Guilty on all counts.
First-degree attempted murder.
Insurance fraud.
Child endangerment.
The judge handed down the maximum sentence.
