Chapter 2 - The Arrest

“It’s a misunderstanding!” my father screamed as the officers grabbed his arms.
He thrashed against them.
His polished shoes slipped on the floorboards where Grandma’s blood was still smeared.
“I was recording for his safety!"
"I was going to stop her!”
Nobody believed a single word.
Across the room, his girlfriend finally groaned.
She shifted on the floor where I had dropped her with the fire extinguisher.
She touched her bleeding head.
Her eyes fluttered open.
When she saw my father in handcuffs, her self-preservation instincts immediately kicked in.
“He made me do it!” she shrieked.
She pointed a shaking finger directly at him.
“He said he owed a hundred thousand to a bookie."
"He said if we staged an accident, the payout would clear his debts!”
My father screamed back at her.
He called her a liar.
He struggled so violently the cops had to force him face-down onto the rug.
I stood frozen.
I listened to the man who raised me accuse the woman he brought into our home.
