Chapter 6 - The Fight

I spent the next forty-eight hours running on black coffee and sheer willpower.

I maxed out my only credit card to hire a ruthless family law attorney named Mrs. Vance.

She was a shark in a tailored suit.

The moment she heard the story of the fire extinguisher, she took the case on a reduced fee.

We filed an emergency injunction to halt the foster placement.

The courtroom was cold and smelled of floor wax.

The CPS lawyer argued that Grandma and I were an unstable household.

He claimed we were traumatized and financially unequipped.

Mrs. Vance stood up.

Her voice echoed like a whip.

"Your Honor, this young woman single-handedly stopped a homicide."

"She saved a newborn."

"She protected her elderly grandmother."

"She is the textbook definition of a capable protector."

"To remove this child from the only family that fought for him would be a secondary trauma orchestrated by this court."

The judge was a stern woman with piercing eyes.

She looked over the police reports.

She looked at my bruised hands.

She banged her gavel.

"Do not make me regret this."
