Chapter 17 - The Mayfair Confrontation

By 10:00 AM on Saturday morning, the rain was falling in a steady, aristocratic drizzle over the manicured private gardens of Grosvenor Square in London’s ultra-exclusive Mayfair district.

The townhome of Edward Sterling was an imposing, four-story Georgian mansion of white Portland stone, fronted by black wrought-iron railings and flanked by two private security guards in tailored trench coats.

When my black Mercedes Maybach pulled to the curb, Arthur Sterling and I stepped out beneath umbrellas held by our chauffeurs. We didn't ring the brass doorbell. We were accompanied by Inspector Thomas Finch of the City of London Police Economic Crime Directorate and an authorized bailiff of the High Court of Justice, holding a freshly sealed freezing order issued under Section 37 of the Senior Courts Act.

The private guards took one look at the police badges, stepped aside, and allowed the bailiff to push open the heavy black oak doors.

The entrance hall was a museum of minimalist, billionaire extravagance: original Francis Bacon canvases on the limestone walls, a cantilevered marble staircase, and the faint scent of expensive sandalwood and burning cedar.

Edward Sterling was standing in the center of his expansive drawing room, dressed in a bespoke cashmere sweater and dark flannel trousers, holding a steaming porcelain cup of Earl Grey.

When he saw me enter, flanked by the police inspector and Arthur, his hand paused midway to his lips. For a fraction of a second, the mask of the detached, untouchable global financier cracked, revealing a flash of pure, venomous fury in his cold blue eyes.

Then, he smiled—a slow, aristocratic sneer that reeked of generational entitlement.

"Audrey," Edward said, setting his teacup down on a low glass table with a deliberate, soft clatter. "You always were remarkably persistent. You dragged a London police inspector into my home on a Saturday morning? Have you completely lost your mind?"

"Good morning, Edward," I replied, stopping six feet from him, leaving my wet coat with the chauffeur. "I see you received the news from Frankfurt."

Edward’s jaw tightened, the muscle ticking beneath his smooth cheek. "A minor administrative delay orchestrated by my cowardly father-in-law. Alistair panicked because you threw around American three-letter agencies. But the underlying debt remains valid, little sister. Aethelgard Capital still holds forty-four million euros in Sterling Maritime notes. You cannot evade payment forever."

"Aethelgard Capital doesn't hold anything, Edward," Arthur Sterling interjected, stepping forward and opening his leather folder. "Because two hours ago, the Dutch Ministry of Finance, acting pursuant to the Van Houten Royal Decree, declared Aethelgard's debt acquisition an unauthorized sovereign encroachment. Under European Union cross-border enforcement protocols, those notes have been transferred into the custody of the Van Houten Family Trust."

Arthur held up a certified document bearing the royal Dutch wax seal.

"The notes belong to Audrey now, Edward. You spent forty-four million euros of your private capital to purchase our own debt, and then handed it straight to the sister you tried to rob."

Edward’s face turned an ugly, mottled gray. He lunged forward half a step, his fingers curling into tight, white-knuckled fists. "That is an illegal expropriation! I will challenge it in the European Court of Justice! I will tie your shipping lines up in litigation until your grandchildren are old!"

"You won't challenge anything, Edward," Inspector Finch spoke up, his British baritone cutting through the room with absolute, clinical finality. "Because as of eight o'clock this morning, the Serious Fraud Office has initiated an active investigation into Aethelgard Capital for cross-border money laundering, tax evasion, and conspiracy to defraud a publicly traded company."

Finch extended a red-bordered document toward my brother.

"This is a High Court Worldwide Freezing Order, Mr. Sterling. All personal and corporate accounts held in your name across the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and the Channel Islands are frozen with immediate effect. You are required to surrender your passport to my office by noon today, and you are barred from leaving Greater London pending your formal interview."

Edward stared at the document, his breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps. The man who had spent his entire adult life looking down on our family, who had treated our father with contempt and viewed me as an incompetent heiress, was suddenly standing in the middle of his Mayfair palace completely stripped of his financial oxygen.

"You..." Edward whispered, turning his bloodshot eyes to me, his voice trembling with sheer, unadulterated hatred. "You destroyed our family. You put your own husband in prison, you purged the board, and now you come to London to destroy your own brother?"

I took two slow, measured steps toward him, stopping until our faces were only inches apart.

"Our father spent forty years building Sterling Global so that his children would never have to bow to anyone, Edward," I said, my voice quiet, clear, and colder than the rain falling outside. "You didn't want to build. You wanted to conquer. You used my cheating husband, you used corporate raiders, and you tried to leave me with nothing so you could play the conquering hero."

I looked around the opulent drawing room, at the priceless art, the marble, and the hollow luxury built on arrogance.

"You aren't a conquering hero, Edward," I whispered. "You're just another parasite who thought that because I was quiet, I was weak."

I turned on my heel, nodding to Inspector Finch. "He's all yours, Inspector."

"Audrey!" Edward shouted as the bailiff stepped forward to serve the asset schedules. "Audrey, you can't leave me like this! The London banks will call my personal credit lines! I’ll be bankrupt by Friday!"

May you like

I didn't stop. I walked through the tall double doors of the drawing room, my heels clicking firmly against the limestone foyer, stepping out into the cool London morning where my Maybach was waiting with the door open.
