Chapter 4 - The Aftermath of the Leak

The news cycle moved with terrifying, destructive speed. Within two hours of the airport detention, the story had broken containment from financial blogs and exploded across mainstream media, social platforms, and morning television talk shows.
In the executive conference room, the wall-mounted television screen was muted, but the chyron running along the bottom read clear as day: STERLING GLOBAL EMBARRASSMENT: EMBEZZLEMENT SCANDAL ROCKS CORPORATE ELITE.
“Who leaked the photos?” Marcus demanded, slamming his hand onto the table. “Only a handful of people knew about the federal flag and the airport security footage at that hour! Was it someone in the fraud division?”
“No,” I said, walking slowly toward the window, watching a growing cluster of reporters and camera crews swarm the front entrance of our corporate headquarters down below. “The bank’s fraud division operates on a strict confidentiality protocol. They didn't leak it.”
“Then who did?” Arthur asked, frowning deeply.
“Chloe,” I answered, a cold realization dawning on me. “Or someone in her immediate circle. Think about it: when Daniel and Chloe were stopped at the gate, they realized instantly that their accounts were frozen and federal agents were waiting for them. Daniel’s life was over. But Chloe? Chloe was just a hired consultant who had hitched her wagon to a sinking ship. She’s entirely self-serving. If she couldn't have the stolen money, she wanted to control the narrative—painting herself as an innocent, manipulated bystander who was merely ‘travelling with a colleague’ unaware of his illegal activities.”
As if on cue, my phone—which I had retrieved from my desk—lit up with an incoming call from an unknown, blocked number.
I stared at the screen for a second before pressing accept and putting it on speaker so the board members could hear.
“Audrey,” a frantic, tear-streaked voice sobbed through the speaker. It was Chloe. The polished, smug confidence she had projected in the airport selfie was entirely gone. “Audrey, you have to listen to me! I had nothing to do with this! Daniel lied to me! He told me the money was legally his from a venture capital payout, he told me our consulting contracts were fully legit—!”
“Save it, Chloe,” I interrupted, my voice as cold as winter ice. “You were wearing my mother’s diamond bracelet in an airport photograph sent directly to my personal phone at 5:00 AM while flashing a victory smile. That’s not the face of an unwitting victim.”
“He forced me to wear it!” she wailed hysterically. “He told me it was a gift, he said—he said you didn't care about it! Audrey, please, the federal agents are questioning me right now, they’re talking about asset seizure, conspiracy charges, federal prison time! You can drop the charges, you have the power to fix this—!”
“I didn't file the federal charges, Chloe. The Department of Justice did, based on four million dollars of laundered corporate funds,” I replied evenly. “And as for my mother’s bracelet? I expect it to be returned to my legal counsel by the end of the business day, or your name will be added as a primary co-conspirator to every single count of grand larceny currently being processed.”
“You’re a monster!” Chloe screamed, her voice cracking into a hysterical shriek before the line abruptly went dead.
I lowered the phone and placed it facedown on the table. The boardroom was dead silent once again. Every board member was staring at me not with pity, but with profound, undisguised awe.
“Well,” Arthur cleared his throat, breaking the heavy silence. “That answers the question regarding the leak.”
“More importantly,” Marcus added, leaning back in his chair with a tight smile, “the public narrative is already shifting. Look at the live feeds. The financial markets are reacting, but not the way Daniel expected.”
I turned back toward the television screen and unmuted the audio.
The news anchor was currently speaking with a high-profile corporate governance analyst:
“...while the scandal is undeniably shocking, Wall Street’s immediate reaction has been surprisingly bullish on Sterling Global. Investors are praising majority shareholder Audrey Sterling for her lightning-fast, ice-cold institutional response. By neutralizing the rogue COO within hours of the breach and protecting the firm’s core assets, Sterling has proven herself to be a formidable, ruthless executive far surpassing her predecessor’s capabilities...”
I stood silently, watching the broadcast. Daniel had spent years convincing everyone—and perhaps even convincing himself—that I was just a quiet, fragile shadow in his life. A piece of furniture to be managed, manipulated, and eventually discarded when a more exciting model came along.

Now, his face was plastered across international news networks as a disgraced criminal, while my name was being heralded as the savior of a multi-million-dollar empire.
And the best part? The real reckoning hadn't even started yet.
