Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Table

The mahogany boardroom table at Sterling Global felt heavier today than it ever had before.

At 8:02 AM, I walked through the double doors wearing a tailored charcoal pantsuit that my mother used to call her "armor." The six members of the executive board were already seated, their expressions a mix of grim solemnity and hushed anxiety. Word of the early-morning emergency filing had already rippled through the upper echelons of the firm.

As I took my seat at the head of the table—the exact seat my mother had occupied for over three decades—every eye turned toward me.

“Good morning, everyone,” I said, resting my hands flat on the polished wood. “I apologize for the abrupt summons, but events over the past twenty-four hours have required immediate, decisive action to protect the assets and integrity of Sterling Global.”

Arthur Sterling, my mother’s former chief counsel and the longest-serving board member, adjusted his glasses, his weathered face creased with concern. “Audrey, your legal counsel briefed us an hour ago regarding the asset freeze and the preliminary audit findings. But... I must admit, the involvement of your husband is difficult to process. Are you certain of the scope of these infractions?”

Instead of answering verbally, I slid a slim, white-bound dossier across the table toward him.

“That dossier contains every single unauthorized wire transfer, every fabricated consulting invoice paid to Chloe Ruiz over the past eight months, and digital forensic proof of forged signature authorizations executed from an IP address originating inside our home office,” I stated, keeping my voice steady and professional. “Total diverted funds currently sit at four million, two hundred thousand dollars. Furthermore, as of 2:30 AM this morning, Daniel attempted to abscond with original physical share certificates and proprietary corporate restructuring blueprints.”

A collective gasp rippled through the room. Marcus Vance, the head of corporate acquisitions, leaned forward, his face flushing with anger. “That son of a bitch. He was positioning himself to execute a hostile backdoor buyout by leveraging our own proprietary assets against us. If those blueprints had reached an external competitor—”

“They didn't reach a competitor,” I interrupted quietly. “They are currently sitting in a secured evidence locker downtown, and the individuals attempting to board an international flight out of the country have been flagged by airport security.”

Arthur opened the dossier, turning the pages with slow, deliberate movements. The silence in the room was absolute, broken only by the faint hum of the HVAC system overhead. When he reached the final page, he looked up, meeting my gaze with a profound mixture of shock and deep, abiding respect.

“Your mother would have been proud, Audrey,” Arthur murmured, his voice thick with emotion. “She always said you possessed the sharpest analytical mind in the corporate sector, even if you preferred to stay behind the scenes. You handled this with absolute precision.”

“Thank you, Arthur,” I replied, nodding slightly. “Now, we have operational damage control to handle. Daniel held the title of Chief Operating Officer. His removal must be immediate, unanimous, and permanent. Following that, we need to authorize a full forensic audit of every department he touched during his tenure.”

Before Arthur could call for the vote, the heavy oak boardroom doors burst open.

Standing in the entryway was Richard Vance—Marcus’s younger brother and our current Vice President of Public Relations—looking completely breathless and pale as a ghost.

“Audrey,” Richard blurted out, ignoring corporate protocol entirely as he rushed toward the table. “You need to see this right now. Someone just leaked the entire story to the financial press.”

My heart skipped a single beat. I stood up slowly from my chair. “Leaked what?”

“Not just the embezzlement,” Richard said, holding up his tablet with trembling hands. “The photos. Photos of Daniel and Chloe being detained by federal marshals at the international terminal twenty minutes ago... alongside surveillance stills of Daniel clearing out your private safe at two in the morning.”

I stared at the tablet screen. There, splashed across the homepage of every major financial news outlet, was a crisp, crystal-clear photo of Daniel in handcuffs, his face contorted in sheer horror, staring directly into the camera lenses of half a dozen reporters.
