“They aren’t just broke. They’re drowning. Rob’s at the center of a massive malpractice suit his insurance refused to cover because of gross negligence.

His assets are frozen. But that’s not the worst part. Daniel — look at the email I just sent you. You need to see whose name is on the secondary loans Vanessa took out.”

The glow of the laptop felt like a spotlight in the dim room. I opened the encrypted file.

Page after page of financial ruin. Robert’s dental empire was a house of cards that had already collapsed. But it was the third document that made my stomach heave — a line of credit leveraged against a massive chunk of collateral.
