Chapter 3

A heavy crystal decanter tipped and shattered.

Emily gasped, falling into the wreckage. When she looked up, a sharp red line of blood was blooming across her temple where a shard of flying crystal had grazed her.

“Mommy!”

The scream tore out of Lily’s throat. My seven-year-old scrambled out of her chair, sobbing hysterically, and threw her body over Emily’s, pressing her small back toward my mother like a human shield.

“Don’t hurt my mommy!” Lily shrieked, trembling violently.

The room froze. The sight of a child having to protect her bleeding mother from her own grandmother was a grotesque painting I’ll never be able to unsee.
