I couldn’t just play defense anymore. If Rob was threatening my child, I needed to know what kind of ammunition he had — and, more importantly, why they were escalating this so violently.
My mother’s reaction at the table hadn’t just been anger. It was panic. The desperate lash of a trapped animal.
I scrolled through my contacts and dialed David Reed, an old college roommate who now ran a corporate investigations and crisis-management firm in the city.
