Chapter 4

Margaret stood over them, chest heaving, eyes wild. “You will always be trailer trash,” she hissed. “Take your bastardized manners and get out.”
I didn’t yell. I didn’t ask why. A cold, mechanical clarity washed over me, shutting down thirty years of conditioning that told me to keep the peace.
I knelt, wrapped my arms around my shaking wife and sobbing daughter, and pulled them up out of the glass. I pressed a napkin to Emily’s temple. I looked at my mother, then at Vanessa.
“We’re leaving,” I said quietly.

As I guided my family toward the front door, my phone buzzed in my pocket. I ignored it until we were in the car, Emily holding a shivering Lily in the back seat.
