Rachel closed the file.
“Find out.”
They found out forty-eight hours later.
Not everything.
Enough.
Vanessa had known for at least six weeks that Rachel was likely Evelyn’s heir.
Her father had learned through confidential information purchased from a private investigator working through an intermediary.
Daniel had not known.
But Vanessa had.
Her affair with Daniel had begun months earlier for personal reasons.
Once she learned Rachel might inherit Northstar, however, Vanessa had kept the relationship alive partly because it gave her access.
She had encouraged Daniel’s resentment.
Encouraged divorce.
Encouraged him to act quickly.
The night Rachel came home, Vanessa knew the inheritance announcement was imminent.
She had wanted Rachel emotionally destabilized before she took control of the company.
Daniel had been manipulated.
But not innocent.
Rachel understood the distinction immediately.
