Three weeks later, Rachel walked into the annual Northstar shareholder meeting knowing several people in the room expected to watch her fall apart.
Instead, she brought receipts.
Not metaphorical ones.
Documents.
Emails.
Financial transfers.
Recorded compliance interviews.
The Northstar director who had secretly cooperated with Holloway Pierce resigned that morning.
Two executives at Holloway Pierce were placed on administrative leave pending investigation.
Vanessa Pierce’s father, Charles Pierce, stepped down temporarily after the firm’s independent committee opened an internal inquiry.
The acquisition proposal collapsed before noon.
Rachel could have celebrated.
She didn’t.
She went downstairs to the engineering lab.
A group of researchers had been developing a portable diagnostic platform designed for rural hospitals that couldn’t afford full-scale imaging systems.
Evelyn had personally protected the program from budget cuts.
Rachel spent four hours with the engineers.
When Monica found her that evening, Rachel was sitting on a stool eating vending-machine crackers beside a prototype machine.
“You know,” Monica said, “most people celebrate surviving a corporate coup with champagne.”
Rachel looked at the crackers.
“These were a dollar seventy-five.”
“Exactly my point.”
Rachel smiled.
Monica handed her a folder.
“Board vote.”
Rachel opened it.
The directors had unanimously confirmed Rachel as executive chair.
She looked up.
“Victor too?”
“Victor especially.”
“Why?”
“He said you irritated him into respecting you.”
Rachel laughed.
“That sounds like Victor.”
Monica hesitated.
“There’s another thing.”
She handed Rachel an envelope.
Daniel’s handwriting.
Rachel stared at it.
“He dropped it off downstairs.”
She didn’t open it until she got home.
Not the Lincoln Park townhouse.
She hadn’t returned there.
