"You said things were different."
Rachel studied his face.
There was genuine curiosity there.
But she suddenly understood something terrible.
If she told him now, everything after that would become contaminated.
Every apology.
Every phone call.
Every tear.
Every promise.
She would never know whether Daniel missed her or what she owned.
Rachel gave him a sad smile.
"It doesn't matter anymore."
She walked away.
"Rachel!"
She kept walking.
The townhouse was three blocks from Lincoln Park.
By the time she reached the corner, rain had soaked through her coat.
Her phone rang.
Emily Carter.
Rachel's oldest friend.
Rachel answered.
"Hey."

"Why do you sound like you're outside?"
