Chapter 4

On the screen was a document titled Project Lighthouse.
Below it appeared the logo of Holloway Pierce Capital.
Daniel’s firm.
Rachel’s stomach tightened.
“What is this?”
Samuel’s voice remained controlled.
“A proposed acquisition strategy involving Northstar Advanced Systems.”
Rachel scrolled.
Her eyes stopped on one name.
Daniel Morgan.
Senior Strategy Director.
She looked up.
“Daniel is involved?”
“We don’t know how much he understands. But his name appears on the internal modeling team.”
Rachel felt the cold more deeply now.
Samuel continued.
“Your aunt rejected three acquisition approaches from Holloway Pierce over the last eighteen months.”
Rachel looked again toward her house.
Vanessa Pierce.
Daughter of the firm’s founder.
Moving in tonight.
“There’s more,” Samuel said.
Rachel looked at him.
“The acquisition only becomes viable if Northstar’s new controlling shareholder can be pressured into selling or if the board can establish that the heir is unqualified to exercise immediate voting authority.”
Rachel stared at him.
“Do they know I’m the heir?”
Samuel’s silence answered first.
“Certain people may.”
Rachel looked toward the townhouse one final time.
For seven years, she had wondered whether Daniel’s ambition would eventually cost them their marriage.

Standing in the November rain, holding evidence that his firm had been targeting the company she had inherited, Rachel realized she had been asking the wrong question.
The marriage might only have been the beginning.
