Skylar Foster’s marriage ended on an ordinary morning inside the Edgewater apartment she had worked years to buy.
She and her husband, Derek, were eating breakfast when he told her that his sister Suzanne needed to use Skylar’s credit card again. Suzanne had already borrowed money several times and had never repaid it, so Skylar calmly refused. She explained that she would no longer finance Suzanne’s shopping, courses, vacations, or unpaid bills.
Derek’s expression changed immediately.
He accused Skylar of being selfish and claimed that helping Suzanne was her responsibility as his wife. When Skylar stood by her answer, Derek grabbed the cup in front of him and threw the hot coffee directly into her face.
The liquid burned her cheek, neck, and shoulder. Skylar stumbled toward the sink and turned on the cold water, struggling to control her breathing. Derek did not apologize or offer to help. Instead, he stood behind her and blamed her for making him angry.

He warned that Suzanne would arrive later that day. By then, Skylar was expected to hand over her bank card, expensive handbags, and anything else his sister wanted. If she refused, Derek told her to pack her belongings and leave.
That threat finally made Skylar see the truth clearly. Derek did not view her as an equal partner. He believed that her salary, savings, property, and possessions belonged to him and his family.
