Chapter 2 - Breaking the SilenceAfter Derek left to pick up Suzanne, Skylar treated the burn as best she could. She placed ice against her skin, gathered her identification, financial records, property documents, and other important papers, then left the apartment. Before walking out, she removed her wedding ring and placed it on the kitchen table.
Beside it, she later intended to leave something Derek would not expect: a copy of the formal complaint she was about to file against him.
At the hospital, Skylar initially struggled to explain what had happened. For years, she had hidden Derek’s controlling behavior and made excuses for his temper. But when a nurse asked whether the burn had been accidental, Skylar finally told the truth.
“My husband threw coffee at me.”
The medical team photographed her injuries and prepared a detailed report. A social worker helped her understand her options, and Skylar gave a statement to the police. With the evidence officially documented, she contacted attorney Sandra Villalobos, who specialized in family law and financial abuse.
A few hours later, Skylar returned to the apartment accompanied by two police officers. Derek and Suzanne were already there, expecting Skylar to apologize and surrender her card.
Instead, they found her standing at the door with law enforcement.
Derek appeared stunned. Suzanne immediately began shouting that Skylar was trying to destroy the family over a harmless argument. Skylar ignored them. With the officers present, she collected her clothing, computer, external hard drives, jewelry, personal records, and several sentimental items.

When Derek noticed the wedding ring and police complaint on the kitchen table, his confidence disappeared. He demanded that Skylar withdraw the report, but the officers warned him not to approach or threaten her.
Skylar left without arguing.
