Chapter 1 - The Price of Desperation

The rain had been falling heavily over Lagos that evening.
Amara stood beneath the leaking roof of a small hospital corridor, clutching a crumpled medical bill in her trembling hands.
₦4.8 million.
That was the amount the doctor had told her they needed.
Her younger brother, Daniel, lay unconscious in the emergency ward.
He was only nineteen.
Her only family.
“Please, Doctor,” Amara whispered, tears running down her cheeks. “Give me more time. I will find the money.”
The doctor sighed.
“Amara, your brother needs surgery tonight. If we delay much longer, we may lose him.”
Her heart stopped.
“Tonight?”
He nodded.
“I’m sorry.”
Amara slowly sank onto a plastic chair.
She had already borrowed from everyone she knew.
She had sold her phone.
She had emptied her tiny savings.
And she worked as a housemaid in the mansion of one of the richest men in Nigeria.
But her monthly salary couldn't come close to ₦4.8 million.
She buried her face in her hands.
“God… please. I don't have anybody else.”
Her phone suddenly rang.
It was her employer.
Mr. Alexander King.
The billionaire CEO she had worked for during the past eight months.
Amara quickly wiped her tears and answered.
“Hello, sir?”
His deep voice came through.
“Where are you?”
“At the hospital, sir.”
A brief silence.
“Your brother?”
“Yes, sir.”
“I heard.”
Amara froze.
“How?”
“The hospital contacted the emergency number you provided.”
Her fingers tightened around the phone.
Then Alexander said something she never expected.
“Come to my office tonight.”
“Sir?”
“I want to talk to you.”
“About my brother?”
“No.”
His voice became colder.
“About something else.”
The call ended.
---
11:40 PM
Amara stood outside Alexander King's enormous mansion.
She stared at the golden gates.
For eight months, she had cleaned this house, cooked his meals, and kept her eyes down whenever he walked past.
Alexander King was known for being cold.
Untouchable.
Powerful.
Women chased him everywhere, but he never seemed interested in any of them.
Tonight, however, something felt different.
The door opened.
Alexander stood there wearing a black shirt, his sleeves rolled up.
“Come inside.”
Amara hesitated.
“Yes, sir.”
He led her into his private study.
A large envelope sat on the desk.
Alexander pointed toward it.
“Open it.”
Amara slowly opened the envelope.
Her eyes widened.
Inside was a bank draft.
₦5,000,000.
She looked at him in disbelief.
“Sir…”
“That will cover your brother's surgery.”
Tears immediately filled her eyes.
“Why would you do this?”
Alexander walked toward the window.
“Because I can.”
Amara shook her head.
“No, sir. I can't accept this.”
“You need it.”
“I'll repay you.”
“I know.”
She looked at him.
“Then… why are you helping me?”
Alexander turned around.
His expression was unreadable.
“Because I want something from you.”
Amara's heart began pounding.
“What?”
He walked closer.
“I want you to spend tonight with me.”
Silence.
Amara stared at him.
She couldn't believe what she had just heard.
“Sir?”
“You heard me.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“You mean…”
“One night,” he said calmly. “Nothing more.”
Amara stepped backward.
“I work for you.”
“I know.”
“And you're my employer.”
“I know that too.”
She looked at the bank draft.
Then she thought about Daniel lying unconscious in that hospital bed.
The doctor's words echoed in her head.
We may lose him.
Her hands began shaking.
Alexander watched her silently.
“You don't have to accept,” he said. “The choice is yours.”
Amara looked down at the money again.
Five million naira.
Enough to save her brother.
Enough to change everything.
She closed her eyes.
A tear rolled down her cheek.
Then, barely above a whisper, she said—
“If I agree… you'll pay the hospital tonight?”
Alexander's expression changed slightly.
“Yes.”
Amara opened her eyes.
And with a broken heart, she whispered—
May you like
“Then… I agree.”
But neither of them knew that this single decision would change both their lives forever.
