Chapter 2 - The Morning After

Amara barely slept that night.
Her mind kept replaying the decision she had made.
She had done something she never imagined she would do—not because she wanted money for herself, but because her younger brother’s life depended on it.
The next morning, Amara rushed to the hospital.
“Doctor!” she cried. “Please, my brother… how is he?”
The doctor smiled.
“The surgery was successful.”
Amara covered her mouth as tears of relief streamed down her face.
“Thank you, God!”
She ran into Daniel’s room and held his hand.
For the first time in days, she could breathe.
But her relief didn't last long.
As she stepped outside the hospital, her phone rang.
It was Alexander.
“Come back to the mansion,” he said.
Amara froze.
“Sir, my brother is okay now. Thank you for everything. I’ll repay every naira.”
There was silence on the other end.
Then Alexander said quietly,
“You misunderstood me.”
“What do you mean?”
“I didn't give you that money as a loan.”
Amara's heart began pounding.
“Then why?”
Alexander's voice became unusually serious.
“Because last night wasn't supposed to happen.”
Amara frowned.
“What are you saying?”
“I need to see you.”
Before she could respond, he ended the call.
Amara stared at her phone.
Something was wrong.
Very wrong.
When she returned to the mansion, Alexander was waiting in his study.
But he wasn't alone.
A beautiful woman in an expensive designer dress was sitting on the sofa.
She looked at Amara from head to toe.
Then she turned toward Alexander.
“So this is the maid?”
Amara's face went pale.
Alexander said nothing.
The woman stood up and walked toward her.
“My name is Victoria.”
She smiled coldly.
May you like
“And I'm Alexander's fiancée.”
Amara felt the ground disappear beneath her feet.
