Chapter 3 - “He Is Not Your Fiancé Anymore”

Amara stood frozen.
The words “I’m Alexander’s fiancée” kept echoing in her head.
She looked at Alexander.
He said nothing.
Victoria smiled bitterly.
“So, you are the reason my fiancé suddenly stopped answering my calls?”
Amara quickly shook her head.
“No, ma’am. I would never—”
“Don't call me ma’am.”
Victoria stepped closer.
“You're just a maid.”
Amara lowered her eyes.
“I’m sorry.”
Alexander finally spoke.
“Victoria, enough.”
Victoria turned toward him.
“Enough?”
Her voice trembled with anger.
“I waited six months for you to return from London. I came here tonight expecting us to discuss our wedding, and instead I find your maid standing in your private study?”
Amara's eyes widened.
“Wedding?”
She looked at Alexander.
“You're getting married?”
Alexander's jaw tightened.
“Amara, you should leave.”
She nodded quickly.
“Yes, sir.”
She turned toward the door.
Then Victoria's voice stopped her.
“Wait.”
Amara slowly turned around.
Victoria reached into her handbag and pulled out a photograph.
She threw it onto the table.
Amara looked at it.
It was a picture of Alexander and Victoria together at an engagement party.
They were smiling.
Victoria pointed at the ring on her finger.
“He gave me this ring two years ago.”
Amara's heart sank.
“I didn't know.”
“Of course you didn't.”
Victoria picked up her handbag.
“But now you do.”
She walked toward the door.
Before leaving, she looked at Alexander.
“You have until tomorrow morning to explain everything.”
Then she turned to Amara.
“And you…”
Victoria paused.
“Stay away from my fiancé.”
The door slammed shut.
Silence filled the room.
Amara slowly turned toward Alexander.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
Alexander looked away.
“Because it wasn't important.”
“Not important?”
She laughed sadly.
“You're engaged.”
He remained silent.
Amara wiped a tear from her cheek.
“I only agreed because my brother was dying.”
“I know.”
“I never wanted your money for myself.”
“I know.”
“Then why do I feel like I've made the biggest mistake of my life?”
Alexander finally looked at her.
“Because last night wasn't a mistake.”
Amara froze.
“What?”
He stepped closer.
“I've been trying to convince myself that it meant nothing.”
He paused.
“But it did.”
Amara's heart raced.
“Sir…”
Alexander lowered his voice.
“I think I'm falling in love with you.”
Amara stared at him in shock.
But before she could answer, Alexander's phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His face suddenly changed.
“It's the hospital.”
He answered.
A few seconds later, his expression became serious.
“What do you mean the test results changed?”
Amara's blood ran cold.
“Is it my brother?”
Alexander slowly looked at her.
“Yes.”

“The doctor says Daniel may not have survived the surgery.”
Amara screamed.
