Chapter 12 - The Conversation I Owed My Mother

A week later, Diane asked to see me.
We met at her house.
She looked exhausted.
“Graham, I know you’re disappointed in me.”
I sat across from her.
“Disappointed isn’t the word I would use.”
She lowered her eyes.
“I thought Natalie would turn you against me.
I was afraid of losing my place in your life.”
“So you made sure I lost my family instead?”
She began crying.
“I never meant for Harper to suffer.”
I thought about my daughter standing alone in a ballroom, begging adults to listen.
“But she did suffer, Mom.
And so did Natalie.”
Diane reached for my hand.
I gently moved it away.
“I hope someday we can rebuild some kind of relationship, but I need distance right now.
Harper’s well-being comes first.”
For once, my mother didn’t argue.
I left without raising my voice.
