Chapter 5 - What Really Happened Two Years Earlier

I remembered the final weeks of my marriage.

Natalie and I had been arguing about money, but not in the way my mother described.

I had recently inherited a portion of my grandfather’s manufacturing business.

My mother wanted me to sell my shares and place the proceeds into a family investment account she managed.

Natalie disagreed.

She believed we needed independent financial advice before making such a large decision.

Diane called her ungrateful.

Vanessa, who worked with my mother’s financial adviser at the time, frequently visited our home.

She always appeared helpful.

She brought documents, explained investment options, and praised my mother’s experience.

Natalie never trusted her.

One evening, I overheard Natalie say, “Graham, please don’t sign anything until someone outside your mother’s circle reviews it.”

I accused her of creating unnecessary tension.

It was one of the last conversations we had before she disappeared.

Standing in that ballroom, I finally understood why Harper’s accusations mattered.

Perhaps Natalie hadn’t left because she wanted money.

Perhaps she had been trying to protect us from losing it.
