Chapter 9 - The Bride Who Finally Told the Truth

Vanessa looked at me with tears in her eyes.
“I didn’t expect things to go this far.”
I felt an unfamiliar distance between us.
“What did you expect?”
She swallowed.
“Your mother said Natalie was going to convince you to withdraw from the investment plan.
She believed your family would lose control of the business.”
“So you helped her?”
Vanessa looked down.
“I helped arrange some of the communications.
I thought your marriage was already over.”
I stared at her.
“Did you send the messages from Natalie’s account?”
She hesitated.
Then she nodded.
My chest tightened.
“And the messages I received saying Natalie wanted nothing to do with me?”
“Some of those were prepared by your mother.”
Diane began crying.
“I did it because I thought I knew what was best for you.”
I shook my head.
“You didn’t protect me.
You took away my chance to know the truth.”
Vanessa reached toward me.
“Graham, I genuinely care about you.”
I stepped back.
“You let me grieve a family I hadn’t actually lost.”
I removed my wedding ring and placed it on the table.
May you like
“There won’t be a wedding today.”
