Chapter 12 - THE HOUSE SHE THOUGHT SHE HAD LEFT BEHIND

Z

Elena had spent most of her life believing her childhood home contained nothing anyone powerful could want.

It was a small yellow house outside Scranton.

Peeling porch paint.

Old oak tree.

Garage door her father had repaired with mismatched panels.

Yet Charles Hale had chosen it.

“Why me?” she asked.

His voice came through the dead landline as though the past itself were speaking.

“Because Alessandro will trade anything for you.”

“No.”

“He will.”

“You don’t know him.”

“I know men like him.”

Elena looked through the kitchen window.

Empty backyard.

Rain beginning again.

“What do you want him to trade?”

“Moretti Development.”

She laughed.

“You’re kidnapping a maid for a real-estate company?”

“You still think you’re a maid.”

Charles sounded almost amused.

“That innocence is charming.”

Elena’s stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?”

“Ask yourself why Moretti hired you.”

“I answered an advertisement.”

“No.”

The room seemed to tilt.

“What?”

“That position was created for you.”

Elena stopped breathing.

Charles continued.

“Alessandro didn’t know. Victor arranged it.”

“Why?”

“Your father.”

The word hit her harder than a slap.

“My father repaired trucks.”

“Your father repaired fleet vehicles for Moretti Development.”

Elena remembered.

Frank Brooks had worked at a commercial garage.

He rarely spoke about clients.

“Victor’s vehicles?”

“Yes.”

“What does that have to do with me?”

“Your father found something hidden in one.”

Elena gripped the counter.

“What?”

“A ledger.”

The conspiracy had started earlier than Matteo.

Years earlier.

Her father had discovered payment records connected to Moretti Development.

He copied them.

Then his workplace accident happened.

Elena’s mouth went dry.

“That wasn’t an accident.”

Charles did not answer.

He did not need to.

Anger flooded through her.

“My father spent two years unable to walk without pain.”

“He should have minded his business.”

Elena closed her eyes.

“What happened to the ledger?”

“He hid it.”

“Where?”

“We hoped you knew.”

“That’s why Victor hired me.”

“To watch you.”

“But I never found anything.”

“No.”

“So why keep me employed?”

Charles chuckled.

“Because Alessandro liked you.”

Elena felt sick.

Victor had used her proximity to Alessandro.

Perhaps watched their relationship develop.

Perhaps planned to use her eventually.

“How do you know Noah is missing?”

“He isn’t.”

Elena froze.

“What?”

“I never took the boy.”

Rage crashed through her.

“You lied.”

“I needed your attention.”

“Where is Noah?”

“With Marcus. Perfectly safe.”

Relief made Elena weak.

Then she heard movement behind her.

Floorboard.

She turned.

A masked man stood in the doorway.

The phone dropped.

Elena ran.

He caught her coat.

She twisted free.

Her father’s old house was small.

She knew every corner.

Every uneven board.

Every door that stuck in damp weather.

The attacker did not.

She slammed the pantry door into him and reached the hallway.

Another man entered through the front.

Elena backed toward the stairs.

No weapon.

No escape.

Then headlights flooded the windows.

A black SUV crashed through the front gate.

Alessandro.

Of course.

The first attacker grabbed Elena.

She drove her elbow backward.

He cursed.

The front door burst open.

Alessandro entered with Dominic.

Everything happened quickly.

Shouting.

A struggle.

One man surrendered.

The other fled through the back and ran straight into Marcus’s team.

Then silence.

Alessandro crossed the room.

“Elena.”

She moved into his arms.

No hesitation.

No pretending.

He held her so tightly she could feel his heart.

“Noah?”

“Safe.”

She closed her eyes.

“Charles lied.”

“I know.”

“About Noah. Not about everything.”

Alessandro pulled back.

“What?”

“My father found evidence.”

They searched the house.

Nothing in the attic.

Nothing beneath floorboards.

Nothing inside old cabinets.

At three in the morning, Elena sat exhausted at the kitchen table.

Alessandro placed her father’s watch beside her.

“Charles returned this for a reason.”

Elena stared.

The watch had stopped years ago.

Her father wore it every day until the accident.

Afterward, he kept it in a drawer.

When he died, Elena took it.

She turned it over.

Scratches covered the back.

One looked strange.

A tiny groove along the edge.

“Elena?”

She used a butter knife.

The back plate popped loose.

Inside was a microSD card.

Alessandro stared.

Her father had carried the evidence on his wrist.

For years.

Marcus arrived with a laptop.

The card contained photographs of financial ledgers.

Names.

Dates.

Payments.

Victor Salerno.

Charles Hale.

Judges.

Police officers.

Businessmen.

And one name none of them expected.

Giovanni Moretti.

Alessandro’s father.

The room fell silent.

Elena looked at him.

“He knew.”

Alessandro stared at the screen.

His father had died eight years earlier.

A man Alessandro had idolized.

A man he believed built the legitimate side of the family business.

Payment records showed otherwise.

Giovanni had been part of the original conspiracy.

“No,” Alessandro whispered.

Marcus scrolled.

Then stopped.

A final file was labeled GM EXIT.

Inside was a letter.

Giovanni had discovered Victor and Charles were trafficking weapons through Moretti companies.

He had participated in early money laundering, but the operation had become something darker.

He intended to expose them.

Three days after writing the letter, Giovanni Moretti died from what doctors called a heart attack.

Alessandro stared at the screen.

“My father was murdered too.”

Elena took his hand.

Two generations.

Two deaths.

One conspiracy.

And Frank Brooks, a truck mechanic nobody important remembered, had preserved the proof.

Alessandro looked at Elena with tears in his eyes.

“Your father may have saved my family.”

Elena thought of Frank Brooks limping through their kitchen.

Fixing appliances because they could not afford replacements.

Telling his daughter that doing the right thing did not always make life easier.

She began to cry.

Alessandro held her.

For once, there were no secrets between them.

Then Marcus spoke.

“We can end this.”

Alessandro looked up.

“How?”

“Charles thinks Elena doesn’t know where the ledger is.”

Elena wiped her tears.

“Then we let him keep thinking that.”

Alessandro immediately said, “No.”

She gave him a look.

He sighed.

May you like

“I knew you were going to say that.”

“This time,” Elena said, “we choose the trap together.”
