Chapter 13 - THE TRAP THEY BUILT TOGETHER

Z

Charles Hale chose Grand Central Terminal for the exchange.

Crowded.

Public.

Thousands of cameras.

Exactly the kind of place a sophisticated criminal assumed nobody would attempt violence.

Elena wore a cream coat and carried a black leather bag containing a fake copy of her father’s evidence.

Alessandro hated every second.

“You stay within ten feet of Dominic.”

“Yes.”

“If Charles asks you to leave the main hall—”

“I refuse.”

“If anything changes—”

“I know.”

He adjusted the microphone beneath her collar.

His fingers trembled slightly.

Elena noticed.

“You’re scared.”

“Yes.”

The easy admission surprised her.

Alessandro no longer treated fear like weakness.

Good.

“So am I.”

He looked at her.

“I should have told you about the fake engagement.”

“Yes.”

“I should have told you how I felt.”

“Yes.”

“I should never have let you believe Victoria was the woman I wanted.”

“Correct.”

His mouth twitched.

“You are enjoying this.”

“A little.”

“Anything else before you risk your life?”

“Yes.”

She straightened his tie.

“When this is over, I’m not coming back as your maid.”

His expression changed.

“I know.”

“I don’t want a promotion either.”

“Good.”

“And I’m not living in a staff cottage.”

“Very good.”

Elena raised an eyebrow.

“You seem prepared.”

“I have prepared several housing options.”

She stared.

“You made a list?”

“A spreadsheet.”

Elena laughed.

The feared mafia boss had made a relationship spreadsheet.

“I love you,” she said.

His face softened.

“I love you.”

Then she walked into Grand Central.

Charles appeared twelve minutes later.

No guards visible.

Dark coat.

Hat.

He looked like a wealthy grandfather traveling home.

“Elena.”

“Charles.”

“You have it?”

She lifted the bag.

“You first.”

“First what?”

“Admit what you did to my father.”

His eyes narrowed.

“This wasn’t the agreement.”

“I changed it.”

“You sound like Alessandro.”

“No. I sound like me.”

Something flickered across his face.

Annoyance.

Perhaps respect.

“Your father found documents that did not belong to him.”

“So you had him injured.”

“I ordered Victor to recover them.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

Charles sighed.

“Victor arranged the accident.”

Elena’s pulse hammered.

The microphone caught every word.

“And my mother?”

“Cancer.”

Relief mixed strangely with grief.

“At least you didn’t steal everything.”

Charles held out his hand.

“The bag.”

“Matteo?”

His expression hardened.

“Elena.”

“Who killed him?”

People moved around them.

Commuters.

Tourists.

Nobody knew history was unraveling beside the information clock.

Charles leaned closer.

“I did.”

Elena’s throat tightened.

“Why?”

“He was bleeding. Angry. Threatening to expose everything. I offered him a chance to disappear.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“No.”

Charles looked tired.

“For what it’s worth, Matteo refused beautifully.”

The cruelty of the sentence nearly broke Elena’s composure.

“He said Alessandro would find the truth.”

Charles smiled.

“He had far too much faith in his brother’s judgment.”

Alessandro heard every word from a control room three blocks away.

Elena imagined what it cost him not to storm into the terminal.

“Giovanni?” she asked.

Charles’s smile vanished.

“You found more than I expected.”

“Did you kill him too?”

“No.”

“Victor?”

“Yes.”

The answer came immediately.

“Poison. Slow enough to resemble cardiac failure.”

Elena’s stomach turned.

Three families destroyed.

All for money and control.

She held up the bag.

“Then take it.”

Charles reached.

Elena pulled back.

“Say Victoria had nothing to do with Matteo’s actual murder.”

His eyes narrowed.

“You’re protecting her now?”

“I’m protecting the truth.”

Charles looked almost amused.

“She initiated the intimidation. She gave Victor the route. But no, she did not know I would kill Matteo.”

That was enough.

Federal agents moved.

Charles saw them a fraction too early.

He grabbed Elena.

A blade appeared against her side.

Alessandro’s voice exploded through her earpiece.

“Elena!”

Charles dragged her backward.

People screamed.

The terminal erupted.

“Back away!” Charles shouted.

Agents stopped.

Then Alessandro appeared at the far end of the hall.

He had ignored every instruction.

Again.

Charles laughed.

“There he is.”

“Let her go.”

“Give me a vehicle.”

“No.”

The blade pressed closer.

Elena stayed still.

Charles whispered, “He’ll do it.”

She looked at Alessandro.

His face showed terror.

Not weakness.

Love.

Elena realized something.

Charles had been right earlier.

Alessandro might trade everything for her.

But Charles misunderstood the difference between them.

He assumed Elena would let him.

“No,” she said.

Charles frowned.

“What?”

Elena looked straight at Alessandro.

“Don’t.”

Charles tightened his grip.

“He’ll watch you die?”

“No.”

She slammed her heel onto Charles’s foot.

His grip loosened.

She twisted exactly as Alessandro had taught her.

Agents surged.

The blade fell.

Charles hit the marble floor.

Alessandro reached Elena seconds later.

His hands checked her face, arms, shoulders.

“I’m fine.”

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

He pulled her into his arms.

Hundreds of people watched.

Phones recorded.

Reporters would have the video within minutes.

Elena suddenly remembered something.

Choose me where everyone can see.

Alessandro apparently remembered too.

He pulled back.

They stood in the middle of Grand Central Terminal.

Police.

Federal agents.

Strangers.

Cameras.

No hiding.

No private hallway.

No secret kitchen.

Alessandro touched her cheek.

Then kissed her.

It was not a dramatic movie kiss.

It was shaking.

Relieved.

Almost desperate.

Elena kissed him back.

Somewhere behind them, Dominic muttered, “About damn time.”

People actually applauded.

Elena started laughing against Alessandro’s mouth.

He smiled.

For one perfect moment, the war ended.

Charles Hale was in custody.

His confession was recorded.

The evidence survived.

And Alessandro Moretti had finally chosen Elena Brooks in front of the entire world.
