Chapter 3 - WHAT MATTEO LEFT BEHIND

Z

Nobody returned to the engagement party.

Within fifteen minutes, the ballroom had emptied.

Guests were politely told that a family emergency had occurred. Drivers were brought around. Phones were discreetly checked at the door.

By midnight, the Moretti mansion contained only family, trusted security, Victoria Hale and enough secrets to destroy several powerful men.

Noah fell asleep on the library sofa with his head in Elena’s lap.

Alessandro sat across from them, staring at the child.

He had barely looked away in an hour.

Lena sat beside Aunt Rosa.

Dominic guarded the door.

Victoria remained in a chair near the fireplace, furious at being treated like a prisoner.

Marcus Vale arrived at 12:47.

Every guard in the mansion reached for a weapon.

Marcus walked through the doors anyway.

He was forty-two, elegant, silver beginning at his temples, dressed in a charcoal overcoat darkened by rain.

Alessandro rose.

The two men stared at one another.

Three years of hatred occupied the space between them.

Marcus spoke first.

“If you still intend to kill me, do it after we protect the boy.”

Alessandro’s jaw tightened.

“You expect me to believe you suddenly care about my family?”

“I cared enough to keep Matteo’s son alive while you were busy blaming the wrong man.”

Dominic shifted uneasily.

Alessandro crossed the room.

Elena thought he might hit Marcus.

Instead, he stopped inches away.

“Convince me.”

Marcus removed a small flash drive from his pocket and placed it on the desk.

“Matteo came to me six weeks before he died.”

Alessandro’s expression changed.

“Why?”

“Because he discovered someone had compromised Moretti shipping manifests. Weapons were being moved through legitimate containers without your authorization.”

Alessandro glanced toward Dominic.

Dominic looked genuinely shocked.

Marcus continued.

“Matteo thought the Hales were involved. He didn’t know how deep it went.”

Victoria laughed.

“This is absurd.”

Marcus ignored her.

“He asked me to investigate because he believed someone close to you was leaking information.”

“Who?”

“Matteo never learned the name.”

“What did you learn?”

Marcus’s gaze settled on Victoria.

“That Charles Hale’s company received shipping data before every compromised container left port.”

Victoria stood.

“My father runs an international security corporation. Of course he receives shipping information.”

“Not encrypted Moretti schedules.”

She went silent.

Marcus looked back at Alessandro.

“The night Matteo died, he called me. He said he finally had proof. We were supposed to meet at a warehouse in Yonkers.”

Alessandro’s eyes darkened.

“He never arrived.”

“No.”

“And you disappeared the following morning.”

“Because the same men who killed Matteo came looking for me.”

“Convenient.”

Marcus smiled without humor.

“I spent three years hiding a woman and a child who could have been bargaining chips worth millions. If I wanted leverage over you, Alessandro, I had it.”

That truth landed hard.

Elena looked down at Noah.

The little boy’s breathing remained steady.

He deserved cartoons and playgrounds.

Not men discussing how valuable his life might be as leverage.

“Enough,” Elena said.

Every man in the room looked at her.

She gently moved Noah’s head onto a cushion and stood.

“You keep talking about him like he’s evidence.”

Marcus’s expression softened.

“You’re right.”

Alessandro looked ashamed.

Elena folded her arms.

“If this is going to continue, Noah and Lena need somewhere else to sleep.”

“They stay here,” Alessandro said.

Lena immediately shook her head.

“No.”

“This property is secure.”

“So was Matteo’s car.”

The room went silent.

Alessandro absorbed the blow.

Then nodded.

“Fair.”

Elena watched him carefully.

A year ago, he would have interpreted resistance as disobedience.

Something had changed.

Perhaps losing Elena in the rain had shown him what control could cost.

“Where do you suggest?” he asked.

Marcus answered.

“I have a safe house in Connecticut.”

Alessandro gave him a cold look.

“No.”

Elena sighed.

“Wonderful. Two men measuring egos while a child is exhausted.”

Dominic coughed to hide a laugh.

Alessandro looked at him.

Dominic immediately became interested in the ceiling.

Aunt Rosa tapped her cane.

“There is another property.”

Everyone turned.

“The lake house.”

Alessandro frowned.

“No one has used it since Matteo died.”

“Exactly. Nobody expects us to go there.”

Lena agreed reluctantly.

Elena looked at Alessandro.

“I’ll go with them.”

His face hardened.

“No.”

She almost smiled.

“There’s that word again.”

“Elena, whoever tracked you to Marcus may be targeting you too.”

“Which means I shouldn’t remain in the mansion where Victoria’s family already knows I live.”

Victoria’s lips tightened.

Alessandro had no response.

Elena walked toward the hallway.

He followed.

“Elena.”

She stopped near the staircase.

“What?”

“I need five minutes.”

“You’ve had nearly two years.”

“I know.”

Something in his voice made her turn.

Alessandro looked exhausted.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

He held her resignation envelope, now wrinkled from the rain.

“I never planned to marry Victoria.”

Elena’s throat tightened.

“You put a ring on her finger.”

“To make Charles Hale believe he’d won.”

“Won what?”

“Access.”

“To you?”

“To my company. My house. My internal security. Everything he’s wanted since Matteo died.”

Elena stared at him.

“The engagement was a trap.”

“Yes.”

“You couldn’t tell anyone?”

“Only Dominic knew part of it.”

“Did Victoria know it was fake?”

“No.”

Elena laughed bitterly.

“That somehow makes it worse.”

“It wasn’t meant to last.”

“Tell that to the woman who spent tonight smiling at me like she’d won.”

Alessandro stepped closer.

“I saw your face after I announced it.”

“Then you should understand why I’m leaving.”

“I understood immediately.”

“But you continued.”

“I couldn’t stop without exposing the operation.”

“And your operation mattered more than me.”

The words came out quietly.

Alessandro closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

Elena had not expected honesty.

It hurt worse than an excuse.

He opened his eyes.

“And I realized the moment you walked out that I had made the same mistake I always make.”

“What mistake?”

“Believing I could sacrifice something personal today and recover it tomorrow.”

His brother.

His family.

Perhaps her.

Elena looked at the letter in his hand.

“You don’t get to recover people like property.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

“I’m learning.”

She wanted to believe him.

That was the problem.

Alessandro reached into his pocket.

For one terrible second, Elena thought he might produce another ring.

Instead, he pulled out her father’s old wristwatch.

She stared.

“I lost that six months ago.”

“No. You left it beside the greenhouse after helping Rosa plant herbs.”

“You kept it?”

“I meant to return it.”

“For six months?”

His expression almost became embarrassed.

“I liked having something of yours.”

Elena’s heart betrayed her.

She held out her hand.

He placed the watch in her palm.

Their fingers touched.

Electricity passed through a place she had spent months trying to numb.

“Why didn’t you say anything?” she whispered.

Alessandro looked at her.

“Because wanting you terrified me more than any enemy ever has.”

Elena stopped breathing.

But before she could answer, Dominic appeared.

“Boss.”

Alessandro turned.

Dominic held the flash drive from Marcus.

“You need to hear this.”

They returned to the library.

Dominic connected the drive.

Static filled the room.

Then Matteo Moretti’s voice came through the speakers.

“If you’re hearing this, I probably failed.”

Alessandro gripped the desk.

The dead man continued.

“Charles Hale is involved. But he isn’t the one I’m afraid of.”

A pause.

Then five words.

“The betrayal comes from inside.”

Everyone in the room froze.

May you like

Matteo’s recording continued.

“And Alessandro trusts him completely.”
