Chapter 2 - THE BOY WITH MORETTI EYES

Z

The Moretti estate changed in less than thirty seconds.

Men who had been serving champagne removed their jackets and reached for concealed weapons. The iron gates at the end of the driveway rolled shut. Two black SUVs moved into position beneath the rain.

The mansion full of politicians, executives and people who had spent the evening pretending Alessandro Moretti was merely a successful businessman suddenly remembered exactly whose house they were standing in.

Elena hated it.

She hated how naturally violence lived here.

She hated even more that a part of her felt safer the moment Alessandro stepped between her and Victoria.

“Give me my phone,” Victoria demanded.

“No.”

“You can’t hold me here.”

Alessandro studied the unsent message.

“Who were you warning?”

Victoria folded her arms.

“My father will destroy you for this.”

“Your father has been trying for three years.”

The words changed the air.

Elena glanced between them.

Alessandro handed the phone to his right-hand man, Dominic Russo.

“Find out where that message was going.”

Victoria laughed.

“Do you really think I’m stupid enough to keep sensitive contacts under real names?”

“No,” Alessandro replied. “I think you’re arrogant enough to believe nobody would ever take your phone.”

Then he turned to Elena.

“Inside.”

“I’m leaving.”

“Someone photographed you with Marcus Vale. Someone followed you long enough to see Noah. You’re not walking into the night alone.”

“He’s right,” Victoria said sweetly. “It would be such a shame if something happened to her.”

Alessandro moved so quickly Victoria flinched.

He did not touch her.

He did not need to.

“If Elena loses one hair from her head,” he said quietly, “your engagement ring will be the least expensive thing your family loses tonight.”

Victoria’s face tightened.

Elena should have felt vindicated.

Instead she felt exhausted.

“Stop.”

Alessandro looked at her.

“I am not a prize for two powerful families to threaten each other over.”

His expression softened immediately.

“I know.”

“Do you?”

The question landed harder than Elena intended.

She pushed wet hair away from her face.

“You announced an engagement without telling me anything. Not that you owed me an explanation. You didn’t. But don’t stand here acting like my feelings suddenly matter because Victoria insulted me.”

“They mattered before tonight.”

“Then you should have said something before tonight.”

He had no answer.

For once, Alessandro Moretti had no answer at all.

Elena lifted her suitcase.

“Let me go.”

“I can’t.”

Her eyes flashed.

“Can’t or won’t?”

“Both.”

She stared at him.

Then the roar of an engine sounded beyond the closed gates.

Every armed man on the property turned.

A dark sedan skidded to a stop outside.

The driver’s door flew open.

A woman climbed out.

Lena Carter.

Elena’s heart nearly stopped.

“No.”

Lena ran toward the gates without an umbrella, one hand holding her coat closed.

“Elena!”

She looked terrified.

Behind her, in the back seat, a small face appeared against the window.

Noah.

Alessandro saw him.

Everything in the feared mafia boss seemed to freeze.

The boy had dark hair.

Gray-green eyes.

A stubborn little crease between his eyebrows.

The same crease Matteo Moretti had worn whenever he concentrated.

Alessandro walked toward the gate like a man moving through a dream.

“Elena,” Lena called again. “They found the apartment. Marcus said we had nowhere else to go.”

“Who found you?”

Lena’s eyes shifted toward Victoria.

And the answer became clear.

Victoria whispered a curse.

Alessandro heard.

He turned.

“You knew where they were.”

“No.”

“Bad lie.”

Dominic approached with Victoria’s phone.

“The message was routed through an encrypted app. One active contact. It traces to a Hale Security server.”

Victoria’s composure cracked.

“My father’s company has thousands of employees.”

“And one of them was watching a four-year-old boy.”

Alessandro’s voice was almost gentle.

That frightened Elena most.

The gate opened just enough for Lena’s vehicle to enter.

The moment it did, Noah climbed out.

“Elena!”

He ran straight to her.

She dropped her resignation letter and caught him.

His little arms wrapped around her neck.

“Aunt Ellie.”

Elena closed her eyes.

For one second nothing existed except his warm body and trembling hands.

Then Noah noticed Alessandro.

He leaned back.

“Who’s that?”

Nobody answered.

The child studied the tall stranger.

Then looked toward the mansion.

Through the open front doors, Matteo’s portrait was visible on the far wall.

Noah stared.

Elena felt Lena go rigid beside her.

The boy pointed.

“That man looks like my daddy.”

The world stopped.

Alessandro turned toward Lena.

His face was no longer hard.

It was devastated.

“Your daddy?”

Noah nodded.

“Mom has pictures.”

Lena began to cry.

“I’m sorry.”

Alessandro walked toward her.

Dominic instinctively moved with him, but Alessandro lifted one hand.

He wanted no guards.

No witnesses close enough to make the moment feel like an interrogation.

“Were you with Matteo?”

Lena nodded.

“How long?”

“Almost two years.”

“Why didn’t I know?”

“He was going to tell you.”

Her voice broke.

“The night he died.”

Alessandro looked away.

For three years, he had blamed Marcus Vale for arranging the ambush that killed Matteo.

For three years, he had built alliances, destroyed businesses and shed blood based on that belief.

Now Marcus Vale had been protecting Matteo’s child.

The realization was unbearable.

“What happened?” Alessandro asked.

Lena looked toward Victoria.

“I found something Matteo left behind.”

Victoria stepped backward.

Alessandro noticed.

“What?”

“A recording.”

Victoria said sharply, “She’s lying.”

Lena flinched.

Noah buried his face against Elena’s neck.

Elena’s anger ignited.

“Don’t raise your voice around him.”

Victoria laughed bitterly.

“You people have no idea what you’re involved in.”

Lena looked at Alessandro.

“Matteo discovered that someone inside the Moretti organization was selling shipping routes to the Hales. He recorded a conversation because he didn’t know who he could trust.”

Alessandro’s expression darkened.

“Who was on the recording?”

“I never heard the full thing.”

“Why?”

“Because Matteo divided it.”

Everyone stared at her.

“He was paranoid near the end. He put part of it on a drive and mailed it to me. He told me if anything happened, I was supposed to disappear.”

“And the second part?”

Lena swallowed.

“I don’t know.”

Aunt Rosa’s voice came from the doorway.

“I do.”

Everyone turned.

The elderly woman stood beneath the mansion lights in a silver evening dress, one hand resting on her cane.

Her eyes were wet.

“Matteo gave it to me.”

Alessandro looked stunned.

“Aunt Rosa?”

“He made me promise.”

“Three years.”

His voice cracked.

“You let me believe Marcus killed him for three years.”

“I let you believe what kept you alive.”

The words hit Alessandro like a blow.

Rosa looked at Noah.

Then she covered her mouth.

“Oh, Matteo.”

Noah stared at her curiously.

Rosa walked slowly through the rain.

She touched his cheek.

He did not pull away.

“You have his eyes.”

Alessandro turned away.

Elena watched his shoulders rise with one uneven breath.

This was the man New York feared.

The man newspapers described as untouchable.

And he was standing in the rain trying not to cry because his dead brother had left behind a son.

Noah looked toward him.

“Did you know my daddy?”

Alessandro slowly crouched.

For once, he did not look powerful.

He looked human.

“Yes.”

“Were you friends?”

A painful smile touched Alessandro’s mouth.

“We fought all the time.”

Noah giggled.

“My mom says Daddy was stubborn.”

“He was.”

“Are you his brother?”

Alessandro’s eyes met Lena’s.

Then Elena’s.

Finally, he answered.

“I am.”

Noah considered this.

“So you’re Uncle Alessandro?”

The title broke something open.

Alessandro bowed his head.

“Yes.”

Noah walked forward and, with the fearless generosity only a child possessed, hugged him.

Alessandro did not move for a second.

Then his arms slowly closed around the boy.

Elena looked away because the tenderness hurt too much.

Across the driveway, Victoria did not look emotional.

She looked afraid.

And Elena realized why.

Noah was not merely proof that Matteo had loved someone.

May you like

He was proof that a witness had survived.

And whoever had killed Matteo had just learned that the dead man’s secrets were coming home.
