Chapter 14

Chapter 14: The Price of Independence

Across town, in a cramped, poorly lit two-bedroom apartment that smelled faintly of stale takeout and cheap cologne, Daniel Ross was packing his life into cardboard boxes.

The panic that had seized him in the Carter bedroom had not subsided; it had evolved into a constant, crushing terror. Every time a car drove past the window, he jumped, expecting Richard Carter’s security team to burst through the door and fulfill their employer’s violent promise.

The door to the apartment clicked open, and Victoria stepped inside.

She looked entirely out of place in the dingy living room. Her designer luggage stood behind her like a line of defeated soldiers. Her eyes were puffy, her makeup completely ruined, and the sophisticated aura she usually wore like armor had completely evaporated.

Daniel looked up from his box, his expression tightening not with affection, but with deep annoyance and fear. "What are you doing here, Victoria?" he asked, his voice sharp. "I told you it's over. We got caught. Your husband is going to kill me."

Victoria stared at him, stunned by his tone. This was the boy who had written her poetry, who had told her she was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. "Daniel... I have nowhere else to go," she stammered, stepping toward him. "He threw me out. I left everything."

"Then go to a hotel!" Daniel snapped, throwing a stack of t-shirts into the box. "Are you crazy? If Richard finds out you're here, he'll ruin my life. He promised to break my legs, Victoria! He has the money and the power to do it, and you know it!"

"Daniel, please," Victoria wept, reaching for his arm. "We love each other. We talked about this. We talked about running away together."

"That was a fantasy!" Daniel yelled, shaking her hand off his arm. "That was when you were a rich woman giving me a monthly allowance and buying me five-thousand-dollar watches! I can't support you, Victoria! I'm a university student with twenty thousand dollars in debt. I can't pay for your lifestyle, and I certainly can't protect you from your billionaire husband!"

Victoria stepped back, the words hitting her like physical blows. The realization began to dawn on her, cold and horrifying. Daniel hadn't loved her. He had loved the luxury she provided. He had loved the thrill of sleeping in a mansion and the power of corrupting a queen. Now that the crown was gone, he saw her as nothing more than a liability.

"You used me," she whispered, her voice trembling with a new, profound humiliation.

"We used each other," Daniel countered coldly, taping the box shut. "You wanted to feel young, and I wanted to feel rich. Well, the ride's over. I'm leaving for my parents' house in Ohio tomorrow morning. I suggest you find a good lawyer, because your husband is going to destroy you, and I am not going down with your ship."

Victoria stood frozen in the center of the dingy apartment, surrounded by cardboard boxes, completely and utterly alone.
