Chapter 29

Chapter 29: The New Synergy
By the turn of the new year, the corporate landscape of the city had stabilized, and Carter Global was reporting its most profitable quarter in history. Richard’s aggressive restructuring had eliminated inefficiencies, and his new focus on expanding into sustainable technology had won the praise of Wall Street.
To celebrate the milestone, Richard hosted an intimate dinner at a private club downtown. The guest list was small—only his top executives, Arthur, and Marcus, who had driven into the city for the occasion.
"A toast to the man of the hour," Marcus said, raising his glass of champagne toward his brother. "To Richard, who managed to turn a tempest into a triumph."
The executives cheered, clinking their glasses. Richard smiled, accepting the congratulations with an easy, unforced confidence. He looked relaxed. The rigid, defensive tension that had sharp-edged his features for months had softened.
As the dinner wound down, Arthur leaned closer to Richard, holding a folder under his arm. "I have the quarterly updates on the estate sale and the foundation transfers, Richard. Everything is balanced. Victoria's restitution has been processed without any press leaks."
"Good," Richard said, taking a sip of his drink. "Let's leave it in the past, Arthur."
"There is one more thing," Arthur added, his expression turning slightly cautious. "Clara received a notification from our campus security contact at Yale. Apparently, Daniel Ross attempted to approach Emma in the university library a few weeks ago."
Richard’s glass paused on its way to the table. His eyes narrowed, a flash of the old, dangerous titan appearing instantly beneath his calm exterior. "What happened?"
"Emma handled it herself," Arthur explained quickly, sensing his friend's rising protectiveness. "She refused to let him speak, threatened him with legal action, and left. The security detail confirmed that Ross has since requested a transfer to an online degree program and has left New Haven entirely. He’s gone, Richard. For good."
Richard stayed silent for a long moment, his fingers tightening around the stem of his glass. The protective instinct roared in his ears, urging him to send his team to ensure Ross never even thought the name Carter again. But as he looked across the table at Marcus, who was watching him with a quiet, concerned expression, Richard took a slow, deep breath.
He remembered Emma's words to him: You don't need to protect yourself from the world. You just need to live in it.
She had handled it. She hadn't panicked; she hadn't run to him to fight her battles. She had faced the shadow of her past with the strength he had helped her build, and she had dismissed it with total authority.
"Leave him," Richard said quietly, setting his glass down. "He's irrelevant now. My daughter has already closed that door."

Arthur nodded, a look of profound relief crossing his face. "Understood, Richard."
Turning back to the celebration, Richard joined in his brother's laughter. The victory wasn't in destroying Daniel Ross or punishing Victoria further. The true victory was watching Emma stand on her own two feet, unbroken by the storm they had left behind.
