Chapter 22

Chapter 22: The Shadow of Suspicion

Despite the new beginning, the trauma of betrayal left a deep, psychological scar on Richard. The man who had once trusted blindly had now swung to the opposite extreme. Suspicion became his default setting, not just in business, but in his interactions with everyone.

Emma noticed it first in the way he treated his corporate staff.

During a weekend dinner at the penthouse, Richard’s personal assistant, a young woman named Clara who had worked for him for three years, called to confirm his travel schedule for an upcoming conference in Chicago.

"Are you sure the hotel booking is secure, Clara?" Richard questioned, his voice sharp and demanding. "I want the registration logs sent directly to my private email. I don't want anyone else checking into that suite or accessing the floor."

"Of course, Mr. Carter," Clara replied, her voice trembling slightly through the speakerphone. "Everything is exactly as you requested."

"And the flight details? Who has access to the corporate jet manifest?"

"Only myself and the chief pilot, sir."

"Keep it that way. If I find out anyone else has been inquiring about my schedule, you will be terminated immediately."

Richard hung up the phone and rubbed his temples, his face tight with anxiety.

Emma watched him from across the kitchen island. "Dad, you're interrogating her. Clara has been loyal to you for years."

Richard looked up, his eyes defensive. "Loyalty is a commodity, Emma. It depreciates very quickly when the price is right. I thought your mother was loyal for twenty-two years. Look how that turned out."

"You can't treat everyone like they're trying to betray you," Emma said gently, stepping closer to him. "It's going to drive you crazy. You're going to push away the people who actually care about you."

Richard sighed, his defensive posture collapsing as he looked at his daughter. He looked exhausted, the constant vigilance draining his energy. "I want to trust people, Emma. I really do. But every time I let my guard down, all I see is that bedroom. All I hear is your mother’s voice telling me I was never there."

"You are here now, Dad," Emma said, placing a hand on his shoulder. "That's what matters. You don't need to protect yourself from the world. You just need to live in it."

Richard reached up, covering her hand with his own. He knew she was right, but the armor he had built was heavy, and he didn't know how to take it off without feeling completely naked to the cold world outside.
