Chapter 12 - The Silk Cloak and the Iron Will

By midnight, the rain had cleared, leaving behind a crisp, starry night over the Mississippi River. The sprawling dry docks of Berth 4 hummed with renewed life as hundreds of union workers and security personnel worked under high-intensity floodlights to repair and secure the sovereign maritime territory.
Inside the grand private receiving room of the estate, a massive oak table was laid out with hot coffee, delicate pastries, and confidential clearance ledgers.
I stood by the tall arched window, looking out over the moonlit lawns, my fingers tracing the silver embroidery of the Vance family crest on a document folder.
The heavy oak doors swung open, and Julian walked into the room. He had changed into a fresh midnight-black suit, his dark hair neatly swept back, looking every bit the sovereign tycoon who had just reclaimed his empire.
In his hands, he carried a long, heavy garment bag made of midnight-blue silk.
He walked up behind me, stopping just inches away so that I could feel the heat radiating from his broad frame.
“You’ve been working twenty hours straight, Elena,” Julian murmured softly, his breath brushing against the nape of my neck.
“There are still three shipping manifests to verify before the morning commission meeting,” I replied, turning slightly to look up at him.
Julian didn't answer with words. Instead, he unzipped the garment bag and lifted out a stunning, floor-length cloak made of heavy, shimmering midnight-blue silk, lined with fine black cashmere—a garment fit for a queen of the southern syndicate.
Before I could protest, he draped the soft silk gently over my shoulders, fastening a heavy silver clasp shaped like an anchor at my throat. The fabric was weightless yet luxuriously warm, enveloping me in the scent of cedarwood and sea salt.
“When you stood at that banquet table in a stained service apron,” Julian said, his voice dropping into a low, resonant register that made my heart race, “you risked your life to save my family from treason. Never again will you wear an apron in this house, Elena. From this moment on, you walk beside me as an equal partner in the Vance empire.”
Tears pricked the corners of my eyes, though I blinked them back proudly, holding his intense slate-gray gaze.

“Thank you, Julian,” I whispered, my fingers touching the heavy silver anchor clasp. “I won't let you down.”
“I know you won't,” he replied, a slow, breathtaking smile touching his lips. “Because tomorrow, we finish what we started.”
