Chapter 7 - The Midnight Audit

The clock on the boardroom wall ticked past midnight, casting long, eerie shadows across the leather chairs and scattered ledgers. While the rest of the city slept, the executive offices at Berth 4 burned bright with artificial light.

We had spent the last fourteen hours unravelling a web of financial corruption that spanned three continents. Every file pulled back another layer of deceit, revealing how deeply the Marseille cartel had infiltrated the Gulf Coast infrastructure.

I leaned back in my ergonomic chair, rubbing my tired eyes with the heels of my hands. My head throbbed from staring at endless columns of numbers and legal jargon, but the adrenaline keeping me awake was wearing thin.

The heavy oak door creaked open, and heavy footsteps approached my terminal.

A steaming porcelain mug was placed gently on the glass surface beside my keyboard. The rich aroma of dark-roast chicory coffee filled the air.

I looked up to find Julian standing beside me. He had removed his suit jacket, his crisp white dress shirt rolled up at the elbows to reveal the intricate dark tattoos wrapping around his forearms.

“Drink it,” Julian instructed gently, pulling up an adjacent chair and sitting down. “You’ve been staring at those offshore accounts for four hours straight without blinking.”

“Thank you, Mr. Vance,” I murmured, wrapping both hands around the warm mug to thaw my cold fingers. “I think I’ve found the last of the hidden shell companies. Look at account designation 404-Delta.”

Julian leaned in close, his shoulder brushing against mine as he examined the glowing monitor. His nearness was intoxicating—a potent mix of cedarwood, sea salt, and raw, undeniable power.

“It’s an inactive subsidiary registered in the Cayman Islands,” Julian observed, his deep voice vibrating right beside my ear. “And the primary beneficiary signature?”

“Not Bianca,” I whispered, holding my breath as I scrolled down to the digital signature block. “It’s signed by Vice-Admiral Thomas Vance... your distant cousin in the federal naval command.”

The temperature in the room seemed to drop twenty degrees.

Julian went completely rigid. The dark obsidian of his eyes flashed with cold, unadulterated fury.

“Thomas,” Julian repeated, the name tasting like poison on his tongue. “The naval liaison who helped clear our import licenses last year.”

“He didn't just clear licenses,” I said quietly, pulling up a secondary encrypted file I had decrypted an hour earlier. “He provided the security clearance codes that allowed Marseille cargo containers to bypass federal customs inspections at the mouth of the river. He was the inside man protecting the cartel all along.”

Julian stared at the monitor for a long, agonizing moment. The betrayal by someone sharing the Vance bloodline cut infinitely deeper than Bianca’s shallow ambitions.

“A family name,” Julian whispered bitterly, clenching his tattooed fist so hard his knuckles turned white, “is only as strong as the men willing to bleed to protect it. Thomas traded our honor for foreign silver.”

He turned his head, his gaze locking directly onto mine with fierce intensity.

“Elena, you didn't just save my brother’s life at that dinner table. You uncovered a rot that could have destroyed everything my father built.”

“I just translated what was in front of me, sir,” I replied softly, my heart hammering against my ribs under the weight of his steady gaze.

“No,” Julian corrected, his voice dropping into a husky, hypnotic whisper as he leaned slightly closer. “You saw through the lies when everyone else was blinded by wealth and status. You belong in this world, Elena. Never doubt that.”

Before I could find the words to answer, a sharp rap on the boardroom door broke the spell.

Leo rushed into the room, holding a secure satellite tablet with a blinking red warning light.

“Julian, you need to see this,” Leo panted, his face pale. “Federal naval intelligence just flagged an unauthorized destroyer movement out of the naval yard downriver. Vice-Admiral Thomas Vance is mobilizing a blockade around Berth 4.”
