Chapter 8 - The Admiral’s Arrival

The first light of dawn cast a cold, steel-gray sheen over the Mississippi River as three gray naval patrol cutters cut through the choppy brown water, their high-intensity searchlights sweeping across the historic dry docks of Berth 4.
On the main concrete pier, Julian Vance stood motionless in his heavy wool trench coat, his dark hair whipping in the river wind. Behind him stood a dozen elite security operatives, their tactical gear concealed beneath long coats, their hands resting near suppressed sidearms.
I stood a few paces behind Julian, clutching my leather portfolio case, watching as a sleek naval launch docked against the rubber bumpers of the slipway.
A man in a pristine white naval uniform bearing the insignia of a Vice-Admiral stepped off the boat, his silver hair neatly combed, his expression carved out of arrogant self-assurance.
Vice-Admiral Thomas Vance.
“Julian!” Thomas called out, striding up the concrete pier with a forced, genial smile that didn't reach his cold blue eyes. “I trust my early morning visit isn't causing too much disruption to your commercial operations. Federal command received an anonymous tip regarding illicit contraband transfers originating from this specific berth.”
Julian didn't smile. He didn't even blink. He simply stared at his cousin with a look so freezing it could have turned the river to ice.
“Contraband, Thomas?” Julian asked, his baritone voice carrying effortlessly over the sound of idling diesel engines. “Or are you here to回収 the remaining assets of your business partners in Marseille before federal marshals seize their ledgers?”
Thomas’s polite smile faltered for a fraction of a second, his jaw tightening beneath his neatly trimmed silver sideburns.
“Watch your tone, Julian,” Thomas warned, stepping closer, though he wisely kept his distance from the security guards. “I am a senior officer of the United States Navy. I hold federal jurisdiction over every port facility along the Gulf Coast. If I choose to impound this shipyard under suspicion of federal conspiracy, your entire empire will collapse within forty-eight hours.”
Leo stepped forward from the shadows, his face burning with righteous anger. “You sold us out, Thomas! You gave Marseille the security clearance codes to bypass customs!”
Thomas sneered, looking down his nose at the younger brother. “Quiet down, boy. You know nothing about how empires are maintained. A family like ours cannot survive on romantic notions of honor and local trade. We need global power, and Marseille offered what local docks never could.”
“Power built on treason isn't power,” Julian stated coldly. He raised his right hand, giving a single, subtle hand signal.
From behind the shipping containers lining the pier, two federal postal inspectors and three senior Department of Justice investigators stepped out into the open, flashing their gold badges under the morning light.
Leading the federal contingent was Special Agent Marcus Vance—no relation, but an incorruptible federal prosecutor who had spent five years trying to pierce the maritime corruption ring.
“Vice-Admiral Thomas Vance,” Agent Marcus announced, reading from an official arrest warrant as he approached the naval officer. “You are hereby placed under arrest for high treason, federal conspiracy, accepting foreign bribes, and aiding international narcotic syndicates.”
Color drained completely from Thomas’s face. He stumbled backward, his hand instinctively dropping toward the ceremonial sidearm at his belt.
“This is an outrage!” Thomas shouted, his voice cracking with panic. “I demand to speak with the Secretary of the Navy! This is a military conspiracy!”
Before his fingers could graze the holster grip, two of Julian’s tactical operatives moved with lightning speed, pinning the Vice-Admiral’s arms behind his back and snapping cold steel handcuffs around his wrists.
Agent Marcus stepped forward, confiscating Thomas’s ceremonial pistol and tossing it to an aide. “Your military jurisdiction expired the moment our cyber-forensics team downloaded your offshore ledger from the Cayman accounts—an encryption break made possible by Vance Shipping’s new intelligence division.”
Marcus turned his head, nodding respectfully in my direction.
I stood tall, holding my portfolio case against my chest, feeling a surge of quiet pride wash over me.

Julian stepped up to his disgraced cousin, towering over him as the naval officers on the patrol cutters watched in stunned silence, unable to intervene against federal marshals backed by the Vance syndicate.
“You disgraced our grandfather’s uniform, Thomas,” Julian whispered, his voice dangerously low. “And for that, you will spend the rest of your natural life in a maximum-security federal penitentiary where no amount of silver can buy your freedom.”
