Chapter 11

Dr. Benton crouched beside her.

“Yesterday was information. Not a contract.”

“It means I can walk.”

“It means we continue working.”

Sophia looked toward me.

Disappointment tightened her face.

I knelt.

“The river did not become safe because we reached the boat.”

She frowned.

“We still needed blankets, doctors, and a hospital. One big moment did not finish the work.”

“What if I never run again?”

“Then you will still have run to me once.”

“That’s not enough.”

“No.”

I did not tell her it should be.

Wanting more was not ingratitude.

“It is a beginning.”

She allowed Dr. Benton to help her up.

Luca watched from the hall.

I could feel his grief filling the doorway.

After therapy, he found me in the kitchen.

The room was smaller than I expected, warm with afternoon light and the smell of chicken stock. A man named Chef Marco—not my hotel manager, another Marco—left bread cooling near the stove.

Luca placed a cream envelope on the table.

“What is that?”

“Compensation.”

“No.”

“You have not opened it.”

“The noun was enough.”

“You saved my daughter.”

“I did not invoice you.”

“You left school to care for your father. You work two jobs. Your apartment lease expires in four months.”

I stared at him.

“Gabriel’s report?”

“Yes.”

“Does it mention the collection account from my father’s medical debt?”

His face revealed the answer.

I pushed the envelope back.

“You do not get to turn gratitude into access.”

“I am trying to repay—”

“You cannot balance this.”

His jaw tightened.

“Everyone has a number.”

“That belief is probably useful in your business.”

“It is useful in every business.”

“No. It is useful when a person wants to replace conversation with a transaction.”

May you like

He looked toward the envelope.

“What do you want?”
