Chapter 25

“I also owe you an apology for what happened after the bridge. My organization made Gabriel’s access possible. I created the conditions where a man could bury a safety report and think loyalty would protect him.”
“You accepted legal consequences.”
“That is not an apology.”
“No.”
He looked at me.
“I am sorry.”
I let the words remain whole.
Did not rescue him from discomfort.
“Thank you.”
His hands stayed at his sides.
“May I ask something?”
“Yes.”
“May I hold your hand?”
I looked at the man who once believed every problem could be solved through money, surveillance, or force.
Then I placed my hand in his.
“Today,” I said.
“Today is enough.”
We dated for two years.
Slowly.
Therapy remained separate before becoming occasional joint sessions.
I kept my apartment.
My own account.
My own keys.
Luca never joined the survivor fund board.
He donated only through independently reviewed channels.
Sophia’s life did not become the bridge between us.
She was a child.
Not a reconciliation strategy.
When Luca proposed, he did it in my kitchen after dinner.
No garden audience.
No hidden photographer.
No daughter holding a sign.
He placed a small ring box on the table.
“You may leave it closed.”
“What happens if I say no?”
“We finish the dishes.”
“And tomorrow?”
“I still respect you.”
I opened the box.
The ring held a small blue stone.
Not extravagant.
The color of Sophia’s happy water.
“I need time.”
“I know.”
I left the ring on the table for four days.
He did not ask.
On the fifth, I called him.
“Yes.”
He became quiet.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
“What changed?”
“Nothing.”
May you like
I looked at the key in my hand.
“That is why I’m sure.”
