A company controlled through two holding entities.
The final beneficial owner was a Moretti logistics subsidiary.
Luca read the report inside his study.
Snow moved over the lake beyond the windows.
“That bridge contract was Gabriel’s responsibility.”
Vincent sat opposite him.
“Yes.”
“Why would he delay one point eight million?”
“At the time, the transport division was hiding a liquidity shortage.”
Luca looked at him.
“You knew?”
“I knew the division was overleveraged. I did not know safety work had been postponed.”
Hayes opened a laptop.
“The city file was accessed six days after Bell submitted the report. The urgent findings were replaced with a summary stating routine maintenance was sufficient.”
“Credential?” Luca asked.
“An administrator account issued to Moretti security for infrastructure coordination.”
“Gabriel.”
“The credential carries his identifier. We are verifying whether it was cloned.”
I looked at the timestamp.
11:43 p.m.
“Where was Gabriel that night?”
Vincent opened an old calendar.
“At Luca’s house.”
Luca stared at him.
“Why?”
“Sophia’s fifth birthday.”
His face drained.
Gabriel had modified the inspection file from inside the Moretti home while a child blew out candles upstairs.
Hayes kept his voice level.
“We still need the device record and authorization chain.”
Luca stood.
“No.”
Hayes’s eyebrows lifted.
“I mean we continue.”
He walked to the window.
“I want every fact before he knows we are looking.”
That choice saved the investigation.
It may have saved Hannah too.
Three days later, I noticed the dark sedan outside my apartment.
The same car appeared near the hotel after my shift.
Then beside the grocery store.
I photographed it from inside the pharmacy window.
