Chapter 11 - THE WAITRESS WHO FOUND HER PURPOSE

Delaney accepted a position with a nonprofit companion-care program.

The work was different from waiting tables.

She helped older adults with social activities, transportation arrangements, and companionship under the program's guidelines.

She loved it.

She loved hearing their stories.

Helping them feel less alone.

And watching them smile when someone remembered their favorite music.

She began taking evening classes in social work.

Her dream changed.

She no longer wanted merely to survive.

She wanted to build something meaningful.

Damon supported her.

But he didn't control her choices.

He attended her nonprofit's fundraiser.

Listened when she talked about work.

And learned to appreciate a life outside his own business empire.

One evening, Delaney invited him to dinner at her apartment.

She cooked pasta.

Nothing fancy.

Just tomato sauce, garlic, and fresh basil.

Damon sat at the small table.

“This is incredible.”

She laughed.

“It's pasta.”

He smiled.

“It's your pasta.”

They ate.

Talked.

Laughed.

Then Damon helped wash the dishes.

Delaney stared.

“What?”

He frowned.

“Am I doing it wrong?”

She laughed.

“No.”

“Then why are you looking at me?”

She smiled.

“I never imagined Damon Bianchi washing dishes in my kitchen.”

He grinned.

“Don't tell Frank.”

Later, they stood beside the window.

Chicago glittered beyond the glass.

Damon took her hand.

“Delaney.”

She looked up.

“Yes?”

“I think I'm falling in love with you.”

Her breath caught.

He continued.

“I know my life is complicated.”

She smiled.

“That's an understatement.”

He laughed softly.

“But I want to be someone you can trust.”

Delaney looked at him.

Then whispered:

“I think I'm falling in love with you too.”

He smiled.

And kissed her gently.

May you like

Outside, snow drifted through the city.

Inside, Delaney felt warm.
