Chapter 3 - THE WOMAN WHO OWED ELEVEN THOUSAND DOLLARS

Delaney returned to work the next afternoon.

Her manager, Vincent Caruso, was waiting.

He stood beside the hostess station with his arms crossed.

“Where were you last night?”

Delaney stopped.

“I told Frank—”

“I don't care what you told him.”

She swallowed.

“An elderly woman was freezing outside. I helped her.”

Vincent laughed bitterly.

“And you left without finishing closing duties.”

“Frank said he'd explain.”

“He did.”

Vincent leaned closer.

“But I don't appreciate strangers telling me how to run my restaurant.”

Delaney looked down.

“I'm sorry.”

He sighed.

“You're lucky I'm not firing you.”

She nodded.

“Thank you.”

The shift was brutal.

Two servers called in sick.

The kitchen ran behind.

Customers complained.

Delaney worked until her feet felt numb.

At eleven that night, she checked her phone.

Another message from Mercy General.

The debt remained.

$11,000.

She stared at the number.

Then locked the screen.

When she returned to her apartment, an envelope lay beneath the door.

FINAL RENT NOTICE.

Her landlord had raised the rent.

She had thirty days to pay the overdue balance or face further action.

Delaney sat on the floor.

She stared at the envelope.

Then began crying.

The next morning, she received a call from an unfamiliar number.

“Miss Whitfield?”

“Yes?”

“This is Frank. Mrs. Bianchi would like to see you.”

Delaney hesitated.

“Is she okay?”

“She's improving.”

“Good.”

Frank paused.

“She asked for you three times this morning.”

Delaney smiled faintly.

He continued.

“Would you be willing to visit?”

She looked at the rent notice.

Then at her work schedule.

“I have a few hours before my shift.”

“That's enough.”

A car arrived forty minutes later.

Delaney climbed inside.

She told herself she was going because Isabella needed a familiar face.

Not because she wanted to see Damon again.

At the mansion, Isabella was sitting near the fireplace.

When she saw Delaney, her face brightened.

“My soup girl!”

Delaney laughed.

“Hello, Mrs. Bianchi.”

Isabella opened her arms.

Delaney hugged her.

They spent the afternoon talking.

Isabella told stories about Damon's childhood.

How he hated vegetables.

How he once brought home a stray dog.

How he cried when his father died but refused to let anyone see.

Delaney listened.

Then shared stories about her own mother.

The kitchen smelled of cinnamon.

Snow drifted beyond the windows.

For a few hours, the world felt gentle.

Damon returned unexpectedly.

He stopped in the doorway.

His mother was laughing.

Delaney was laughing.

The room felt alive.

He watched them.

Then said:

“Am I interrupting?”

Isabella smiled.

“Yes.”

Delaney laughed.

Damon raised an eyebrow.

“Good to know.”

May you like

He sat beside them.

And for the first time in years, the Bianchi mansion felt like a home.
