Chapter 13 - THE ELEVEN THOUSAND DOLLARS

Delaney's hospital debt finally came to an end.

Not through a secret check.

Not through a grand gesture.

But through months of work, financial counseling, and a negotiated payment arrangement.

The hospital reviewed the account and corrected several billing errors.

A financial assistance program reduced the remaining balance.

Delaney paid the rest through a manageable plan.

One afternoon, she received a letter.

ACCOUNT PAID IN FULL.

She stared.

Then sat down.

And cried.

Damon arrived that evening.

He found her sitting at the kitchen table.

“Delaney?”

She looked up.

Then held out the letter.

He read it.

His face softened.

“You did it.”

She nodded through tears.

“I did.”

He hugged her.

She laughed.

“I'm free.”

He smiled.

“Yes.”

That night, Delaney took a small box from her dresser.

Inside was a photograph of her mother wearing her wedding ring.

She touched the image.

“I wish she could see this.”

Damon stood beside her.

“She'd be proud.”

Delaney smiled through tears.

He took her hand.

“Your mother raised someone extraordinary.”

She looked at him.

May you like

Then kissed him.

For the first time in years, Delaney could imagine a future without the weight of that number following her everywhere.
