Chapter 10 - The Horizon

One year later.
The sprawling Navarro estate was unrecognizable. The dark, oppressive atmosphere of grief and fear had been completely scrubbed away, replaced by light, music, and the constant sound of a child’s laughter.
Sofia sat on a woven lounge chair by the massive infinity pool, a wide-brimmed sun hat shielding her face. Beside her, a healthy, energetic Diego was playing a video game, his new kidney functioning perfectly.
"Watch this, Sofia!" Leo yelled from the edge of the pool.
He jumped, doing a chaotic cannonball into the crystal-clear water, splashing water all over Dante, who was standing waist-deep in the pool.
Dante roared in mock anger, grabbing the five-year-old and tossing him high into the air, both of them laughing hysterically as Leo splashed back down.
Sofia watched them, a profound sense of peace settling over her chest. She rested her hand on her slightly swollen belly, feeling the faint flutter of a new life growing inside her.
Dante waded through the water toward the edge of the pool, resting his muscular arms on the tiles next to Sofia’s chair. He looked at her, his dark eyes filled with absolute adoration, and placed a wet hand gently over hers on her stomach.
"Everything good?" he asked quietly.

"Everything is perfect," Sofia smiled, leaning down to kiss him.
The monsters of Jalisco still existed, and the cartel world was still dangerous. But inside the walls of the Navarro estate, the shadows had been completely banished by a girl from the slums who was brave enough to drop to her knees, look into the dark, and pull a family back into the light.
