Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

The silence in the sunroom was absolute.
Before Hector could draw his weapon, the heavy mahogany doors of the sunroom were kicked open.
Dante Navarro stood in the doorway. He had returned early from the warehouse. He had heard his son's voice.
Dante walked slowly into the room, his eyes moving from the diamond necklace, to Sofia being held by the guards, to his son holding a makeshift weapon against his head of security.
"Release her," Dante ordered the guards. They immediately dropped Sofia's arms.
Dante dropped to one knee in front of Leo, ignoring the sharp piece of ceramic. "Leo. What did you just say?"
Leo’s lip quivered, the feral rage breaking into terrified tears. He pointed a trembling finger at Hector. "The man with the scar. He was on the phone. He told the bad men to shoot the car. He killed Mama."
Dante didn't move. He didn't blink. Slowly, mechanically, he stood up and turned to face Hector.
Hector took a step back, his hand dropping to his holster. "Boss, the kid is crazy! The maid put him up to this! She was stealing—"
"Sofia," Dante interrupted, his voice eerily calm, never taking his eyes off Hector. "Take Leo to the panic room. Lock the steel door. Do not open it for anyone but me."

Sofia scooped Leo into her arms, running out of the sunroom as fast as her legs could carry her.
As the heavy doors slammed shut behind her, she heard the terrifying sound of a man screaming.
