Chapter 7 - The Interrogation

Sofia sat in the subterranean panic room for three hours, holding Leo tightly against her chest. The boy was exhausted, finally sleeping soundly, his tiny fingers gripped tightly around Sofia’s shirt.
Upstairs, a nightmare was unfolding.
Dante Navarro did not call the police. The cartel had their own justice system, and it was infinitely more brutal. Hector was dragged down to the soundproof interrogation rooms beneath the compound.
Faced with Dante’s absolute, unhinged wrath, Hector broke.
He confessed to everything. He had been bought by a rival cartel in Sinaloa. He had provided them with Isabella’s travel route two years ago, orchestrating the ambush to weaken Dante so the rivals could take over the shipping routes. He had planted the necklace on Sofia because she was getting too close to Leo, and he knew it was only a matter of time before the boy felt safe enough to speak the truth.
When Dante emerged from the basement, his knuckles were bruised, and his white shirt was stained with blood. Hector would never betray anyone ever again.
Dante walked to the panic room and entered the passcode.
The heavy steel door hissed open. Sofia looked up from the cot, her eyes wide with fear.
Dante stepped inside, locking the door behind him. He looked at Sofia, then at his sleeping son. The monster that the underworld feared was gone. In his place was a shattered, exhausted father.

Dante sank to the floor beside the cot, burying his face in his blood-stained hands, and wept.
Sofia didn't hesitate. She slid off the cot and wrapped her arms around Dante, pulling him into her embrace, holding the cartel boss exactly the same way she had held his son.
