The Bride’s Final Bargain

Chapter 11 - The Bride’s Final Bargain
Vanessa contacted Daniel the next afternoon from a private number. Her voice was calm again, almost affectionate. She said she had the original agreement and would exchange it for three things: no criminal complaint over the forged signature, a financial settlement, and a public statement blaming the canceled wedding on “family stress.”
Without the agreement, Malcolm could still claim Owen acted alone. With it, the entire fraud could be exposed.
Lena advised Daniel to let law enforcement manage the exchange. Vanessa, however, insisted on meeting at the empty chapel where the wedding rehearsal had taken place. She said she would destroy the document if she saw police.
Daniel agreed, but he did not go alone. Maya equipped him with a recording device, and investigators waited beyond the property line.
Vanessa stood at the altar in a plain cream coat, holding a sealed envelope. For a moment, Daniel saw the woman he thought he had loved—the woman who knew how he took his coffee, who had sat beside him during sleepless nights, who had promised Sophie a family.
“Was any of it real?” he asked.
Vanessa’s expression softened. “Some of it. But real love does not pay debts or protect weak companies.”
“She was eight years old.”
“She was in the way.”
The words echoed through the chapel.
Vanessa offered him the envelope. “Give me what I asked for, and Sophie never has to hear another word about this.”
Daniel did not reach for it. “You still think silence protects her.”
“It protects everyone.”
“No. It protects the person who caused the harm.”
Vanessa’s hand tightened around the envelope. She threatened to burn it, but Daniel told her Owen’s drive already proved most of the scheme. The original would strengthen the case, not create it. Her leverage was gone.
For the first time, she looked frightened.
She turned toward the side door and found two investigators waiting there. Maya’s live recording had captured the entire conversation, including Vanessa’s admission that Sophie had been “in the way.”
Vanessa dropped the envelope.
As officers approached, she looked at Daniel with disbelief. “You’re choosing a child over everything we built.”

Daniel picked up the document from the chapel floor.
“No,” he said. “I’m choosing my daughter over everything you tried to take.”
