Chapter 08 - The Missing Diamond Bracelet
The bracelet had been photographed on Vanessa’s wrist during breakfast and reported missing shortly after the ceremony was canceled. She claimed Sophie had entered the bridal suite, taken the boarding-school papers, and stolen the bracelet out of anger.
Daniel refused to let police question Sophie alone. Lena was present, along with a child advocate. Sophie answered every question, even when her voice became small. She admitted taking the key and enrollment form, but she denied touching the jewelry.
“I only wanted proof Dad wasn’t sending me away,” she said.
Vanessa’s attorneys leaked the accusation within hours. Online comments turned cruel. Strangers called Sophie spoiled, manipulative, and jealous of her father’s happiness. Daniel wanted to destroy every screen in the house, but Maya reminded him that reacting publicly could expose Sophie further.
So they searched quietly.
Maya reviewed hours of wedding footage. Claire questioned the staff. The housekeeper, Rosa Alvarez, remembered seeing Vanessa’s personal assistant carry a white garment bag out of the bridal suite shortly before the ceremony. The assistant, Erin Vale, had disappeared after the wedding and was not answering calls.
Daniel found her through a company car record. Erin was staying at an airport hotel under her sister’s name, waiting for a flight to Mexico City.
Lena contacted her attorney before the police reached her. Faced with possible charges, Erin agreed to talk.
Vanessa had ordered her to hide the bracelet inside Sophie’s overnight bag. Erin had carried it upstairs but lost her nerve when she saw a framed photograph of Sophie and Rachel beside the bed. Instead, she placed the bracelet inside the garment bag and took it away from the mansion.
“She told me the girl would only be embarrassed for a few days,” Erin said during a recorded interview. “She said children forget. Adults control what becomes true.”
The bracelet was recovered from the hotel safe.
The theft complaint collapsed, but Daniel felt no victory. Sophie had heard the accusations. She had seen strangers discussing her as though she were a character in a show. That evening, she asked him a question he could not answer quickly.
“Why did so many people believe her before they even knew me?”

“Because a confident lie can travel faster than a frightened truth,” he said. “But it doesn’t make the lie stronger. And from now on, you won’t have to carry the truth by yourself.”
