Chapter 06 - The Woman in the Security Room
By sunset, the guests were gone, but the scandal had already escaped the mansion. Photos of Vanessa leaving through a side entrance appeared online. Headlines called Daniel a runaway groom, a grieving billionaire, and an unstable father. None mentioned the frightened child in the hallway, and Daniel intended to keep it that way.
Claire took Sophie to a quiet guest room while Daniel met with his attorney, Lena Ortiz. Lena examined the forged enrollment form and listened to the recordings twice. She said they had enough to stop the school transfer, but proving a larger conspiracy would require evidence Vanessa had not prepared to explain away.
That evidence arrived from an unexpected source.
Maya Brooks, the wedding videographer, asked to speak privately. She was not a stranger. Years earlier, she had been a close friend of Daniel’s late wife, Rachel, but grief had pushed Daniel away from nearly everyone who remembered his old life. Maya had accepted the wedding job without telling him because Vanessa’s office hired her company through an agency.
In the security room, Maya showed them footage captured by a small backup camera used for behind-the-scenes wedding shots. It showed Vanessa leading Sophie into the upstairs study that morning. Twenty minutes later, Vanessa emerged alone, locked the door, and walked away. Sophie appeared at the window several minutes after that, pounding silently on the glass.
Daniel stopped breathing.
A housekeeper eventually opened the door. The main hallway cameras had somehow gone offline during the same period, but Maya’s equipment had continued recording.
“There’s more,” Maya said.
Her camera microphone had caught Vanessa speaking to Malcolm near the staircase.
“Once the papers are processed, the girl becomes a medical issue,” Vanessa said. “Daniel will sign anything if he thinks it protects her.”
Malcolm answered, “And if he hesitates?”
“Then we remind him the board can remove a distracted CEO.”
Daniel gripped the edge of the desk. The plan was no longer about sending Sophie away. It was about convincing him—and eventually the company board—that his daughter’s supposed instability made him incapable of leading. Vanessa would isolate Sophie, control the story, and pressure Daniel into surrendering authority.
Maya turned off the screen. “Rachel used to say Sophie would tell the truth even when her voice shook.”

“She did,” he said. “I’m the one who took too long to hear it.”
