The next morning, Lena returned with a copy of the final prenuptial agreement. Daniel had reviewed an earlier version, but Vanessa’s legal team had delivered revisions during the frantic week before the wedding. Buried in the new language was a clause that made no sense until Sophie’s recordings came to light.
If Daniel became “temporarily impaired by a family medical crisis,” voting authority over his Hartwell shares would transfer to his spouse for up to twelve months. Another document—an unsigned trust amendment found in Vanessa’s locked desk—named her as administrator of Sophie’s education and care fund.
Together, the papers formed a blueprint. Sophie would be labeled unstable and removed. Daniel would be portrayed as emotionally compromised. Vanessa would gain control of his voting shares just long enough for Malcolm to force the merger he wanted.
Lena warned that Vanessa’s lawyers would claim the documents were normal contingency planning. The forgery, recordings, and video changed that, but the fight would still be ugly.
Then Daniel’s longtime chief financial officer, Owen Price, called. Malcolm had ordered Hartwell’s lenders to freeze a critical line of credit. Payroll was due Friday. Hundreds of families could be affected.
Daniel felt the old panic rise. This was how Vanessa had controlled him: every threat came attached to innocent people who might suffer if he resisted.
Claire found him alone in the study, staring at the company’s financial reports.
“You’re thinking about making a deal,” she said.
“I’m thinking about my employees.”
“You were thinking about everyone except Sophie yesterday.” Claire’s words were painful because they were true. “Don’t repeat the mistake in a different suit.”
Daniel expected anger from her. Instead, she placed a folder on the desk. Claire had spent the night calling former Hartwell executives. Several were willing to provide emergency financing if Daniel returned transparency to the company and removed Malcolm’s allies from the board.
“You did this after I shut you out for a year?” he asked.
“You’re my brother. Sophie’s my niece. Love doesn’t become false just because someone was foolish with it.”
For the first time since the hallway, Daniel allowed himself to believe they might survive without surrendering.
Then Lena received an urgent message from the police.
Vanessa had filed a complaint accusing Sophie of stealing jewelry worth nearly a hundred thousand dollars from the bridal suite.
