Chapter 21 - The Blackout Protocol

The darkness hit like a physical blow.

Before the echo of the dying generators had even faded, Luca’s hand clamped around my wrist, pulling me hard against his chest. In the same fluid breath, the cold steel of his Kimber Custom II clicked as he racked the slide in the dark.

"Stay behind me, Elena," he whispered, his voice dropping into that chilling, lethal cadence I had come to recognize whenever the Moretti empire was under siege. "Don't drop that box."

Outside, the tactical siren howled through the pines—a sharp, oscillating wail that signaled an active breach of the outer perimeter wire. Red emergency lights flickered to life along the baseboards of the library, bathing the mahogany walls and leather armchairs in an eerie, blood-tinted glow.

The head of security was already speaking in rapid, hushed bursts into his radio headset. "Sector Four gate is down. Heavy ram. Multiple thermal signatures advancing through the north gardens. Boss, this isn't street muscle. They've got military-grade jammers—our primary comms are fried."

"Mother," Luca said, his eyes scanning the narrow corridor outside the library. "Where is my mother?"

"Mrs. Moretti is in the private chapel in the east wing," the guard replied, drawing his secondary weapon. "Marco and two men are locked down with her."

"Move her to the subterranean vault immediately," Luca ordered without hesitation. "Elena and I will cut through the kitchen passage. If anyone crosses the threshold unannounced, put two in their chest."

"Understood, Boss."

Luca turned to me, his amber eyes reflecting the dull red glare of the floor lamps. He caught my chin with his free hand, his thumb steadying the tremor in my lips. "Elena. Look at me."

I forced my gaze up from the open box in my hands. The silver pocket watch lay cold against the velvet, its hands frozen forever at 3:17.

"I'm here," I whispered, holding the heavy box tight against my ribs.

"Whoever is out there came for whatever is in that box," he said, his gaze dropping to the coiled serpent emblem. "Which means they came for you. You don't leave my side, no matter what happens. Do you hear me?"

"I hear you."

A sudden cascade of suppressed automatic gunfire erupted from the lower terraces, followed by the dull, thumping detonation of a flashbang. Glass shattered somewhere on the ground floor.

Luca took my hand, his grip unyielding, and pulled me out into the corridor. The gilded hallways where I had once carried trays of tea and brushed velvet curtains were now a tactical war zone. Every shadow stretched like a predator, and the faint smell of burning copper and ozone drifted through the air vents.

We descended the back stairs—the narrow, uncarpeted wooden steps used exclusively by the staff. My feet knew every turn, every loose floorboard that might creak under pressure.

"Left here," I whispered, guiding him through the pantry entry. "It bypasses the main dining hall entirely."

We slipped through the heavy swinging doors into the commercial kitchen. The stainless steel prep tables stood silent under the crimson emergency glow. On the stove, the brass stockpot from earlier that evening was still faintly warm, the scent of rosemary and simmered chicken stock lingering like a ghost of peace in a house turned to war.

Then, from the dark archway leading to the inner courtyard, a beam of harsh white tactical light sliced across the stainless steel.

"Clear," a voice rasped in heavily accented English.

Luca shoved me behind the massive prep island just as a silencer hissed, chipping the industrial tile where my head had been half a second before.
