Chapter 8 - The Collapse of the Bellini Dynasty

The color drained entirely from Salvatore Bellini’s face. The heavy diamond ring on his finger trembled as he gripped the edge of the mahogany table, his eyes darting frantically between Luca and the documents spread out before him.

“You—you’re bluffing,” Salvatore choked out, though his voice lacked any real conviction. “Those records were destroyed decades ago during the federal raids on the South Side warehouses. No one survived who knew where they were hidden.”

“My father survived,” Luca said quietly, his voice carrying the terrifying weight of inevitability. “And my mother kept the ledger safe in a battered leather suitcase until yesterday afternoon—right before your daughter told her she wasn't dressed well enough to sit at my engagement dinner.”

Vanessa stared at her father in absolute panic. “Dad? What is he talking about? Make him burn those papers! Tell your men to—!”

“Shut up, Vanessa!” Salvatore roared, slamming his fist against the table so hard the crystal glasses rattled. He glared at his daughter with unmasked fury. “Your petty vanity and your obsession with social climbing just destroyed forty years of work in a single night!”

The enforcers standing near the doors exchanged nervous glances, their hands slowly slipping away from their holsters. In the underworld, loyalty followed power—and Salvatore Bellini had just lost his grip on everything.

Luca stood up, buttoning his suit jacket with calm precision.

“Here is how this is going to end, Salvatore,” Luca said, towering over the broken syndicate boss. “You call off your thugs from the freight yards by 1:00 PM. You publicly announce that you are stepping down from the board of the shipping union for ‘health reasons.’ And you never, ever step foot in the Gold Coast district again.”

Salvatore swallowed hard, his shoulders slumping in defeat. He looked ten years older than he had ten minutes ago. “And… and if I refuse?”

“Then the Department of Justice receives the complete, unabridged archive of the Bellini family corruption before the stock market opens tomorrow morning,” Luca replied flatly. “Choose wisely.”

For three long seconds, the room was suspended in absolute silence. Then, Salvatore slowly nodded.

“Done,” he whispered. “You win, Moretti.”

Luca didn't offer a handshake. He simply turned his back on them, nodding to me. “Come on, Emma. We have a mansion to run.”

As we walked out of the social club into the crisp autumn air, the heavy weight of fear that had suffocated me for months finally evaporated. The dark clouds over Chicago were beginning to break, letting golden shafts of sunlight pour down onto the pavement.
